We’re reflecting on 2023 with a countdown of our top-downloaded resources from the year. #3 was the Commission’s landmark #BringingThemHome report from 1997 – even 26 years after the report was published, it was downloaded more than 20,000 times in 2023. The report was the result of a national inquiry conducted by the Commission, that investigated the historical policies of forced removal of First Nations children from their families. The report outlines the many intersections of injustice, and the historical pain of child removal in this nation. First Nations children continue to be removed from their families at disproportionate rates – disrupting their connection to community and culture. To address this ongoing injustice, the remaining Bringing Them Home report recommendations must be fully implemented. #TriviaTuesday is highlighting Kids Above All 🚸 Kids Above All was founded in 1894 on the principles of alleviating suffering, eradicating the causes of injustice, and facilitating the development of full human potential. They continue that work today, placing the safety, well-being, and education of kids above everything else. Though Kids Above All’s programs have evolved to meet their clients’ needs, the 129-year-old mission to build better lives for our clients remains at the core of their work to ensure all kids have every opportunity to become independent adults who lead meaningful, productive lives. National Child Protection Week 2024 theme is ‘Every Conversation Matters’, highlighting conversations as powerful tools to keep children and young people safe and well. NAPCAN highlight conversations as a way to help us understand issues, craft solutions, value community knowledge and build the brains and social connections of children and young people. The theme chosen this year aims to provide a platform to equip us to have conversations that keep children and young people safe. Earlier this week, we shared our report ‘More for Children: Children’s Experiences of Poverty in Australia”. Bringing children’s voices and experiences to the fore is vital, but so too is the WAY in which children and young people are engaged in this process. At the Children’s Policy Centre we believe that HOW we engage with children and young people must be the primary concern. We follow rights-based, child-centred principles to ensure that children are treated with dignity and their views are respected. NYEC has released a literature review entitled "The Intersections between Youth Experiencing Homelessness, Youth Supports and Employment" which underscores the current need for resources and supportive networks, the value in youth voice when building solutions, and examples of programming throughout the country focused on bridging housing and employment. Equal access to quality education for the poorest of the poor is an issue of social justice. By equipping children from the world’s poorest communities with education and skills, they have the chance to live independent, dignified lives, free from poverty. We must take an active role in social justice and help empower others to live with dignity. Here are the top (4) reasons reentry programs and services face a multitude of problems and issues such as: 1. The lack of resources and funding available to support these programs. 2. Limited accessibility and availability of reentry programs. 3. The effectiveness of reentry programs is often questioned. 4. The stigma surrounding individuals with criminal records often hinders their successful reentry into society. Providing reentry programs and services is necessary in breaking the cycle of generational poverty because effective reentry programs address the specific challenges faced by individuals upon release from prison. And investing in reentry programs, such as our 2nd Chance Hub, society can empower individuals to overcome the barriers they face and create a brighter future for themselves and future generations.
