🌎 Unpacking the Power of Diversity in Global Business Strategies with AUSSENWIRTSCHAFT AUSTRIA | Female Founders | C&A
Last week at the Exporttag 2024, we dove deep into the transformative role that diversity and inclusion play in global expansion. As highlighted during our panel, "Even though diversity is a no-brainer when expanding, many start-ups still fail to sufficiently acknowledge this dimension," as noted by Renate Schnutt.
Incorporating insights from Erin Meyer’s "The Culture Map", our discussion explored how understanding cultural dimensions—such as communicating across high and low-context cultures—can drastically improve international business interactions. Meyer’s framework illustrates the importance of adapting to different cultural norms to foster effective communication and collaboration.
This is why we pledge to champion diversity and inclusion as crucial KPIs for business success, far beyond the HR agenda, bringing these practices to every strategic table in Austria and beyond.
Thank you to our great panelists:
🔵 Renate Schnutt from the Außenwirtschaft Austria, who provided profound insights into the nuances of global trade.
🔵 Valerie Hengl, CEO of Female Founders, whose dedication to empowering female entrepreneurs continues to inspire.
🔵 Norbert W. Scheele Scheele, Head of European Expansion at C&A, who shared invaluable strategies on scaling operations across diverse European markets.
🔵 Josefine Schulze, who masterfully hosted the discussion, weaving together domain expertise and professionalism.
🔵 Our keynote speaker, Desiree Jonek-Lustyk, whose expertise in Diversity-Equity-Inclusion research set a thought-provoking tone for our conversation.
👉 Why should you care? Embracing cultural diversity and inclusion isn't just the right thing to do; it's a strategic imperative that drives innovation and growth. As we continue to face global challenges, integrating these values into the core of our business strategies is essential for sustainable success.

This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering diverse perspectives and inclusive leadership. 🌍🤝
We believe that embracing differences drives innovation and sustainable success. The Nordic Business Diversity Index continues to be the most extensive ranking of its kind in the Nordics, sparking crucial conversations about the importance of diversity in boardrooms and executive teams. About a year ago, the amazing Stephanie Kee (MA, MPhil) reached out to me with an interesting question: After gaining some traction in Europe and North America, we are thinking of setting up our first Women in Alliances APAC chapter. Do you want to take the lead from Singapore?
Despite my usual initial self-doubt (yes, that still happens 😆 ), I decided to take the leap of faith because Strategic Partnerships/Alliances is something I truly enjoy and am passionate about.
Navigating strategic partnerships is akin to artistry rather than a science. It is often challenging to quantify but yields substantial benefits for organisations. Collaboration only thrives when partners pool their strengths and resources, align their goals and values, foster trust, and maintain open communication to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. These endeavours demand unwavering commitment and adept relationship-building skills, particularly in today's complex and challenging business environment. 💻
At Women In Alliances, we engage in meaningful initiatives such as sharing best practices and providing mentorship. If you're keen to learn more and be part of our vibrant community or simply want to join our networking sessions, check out the details below and join our free group 😊
If you are not based in Singapore, we have chapters around the world 🌏

One of the most powerful business (and personal) strategies is owning one's narrative.
Because unless you have a story, you have no way to persuade people.
If you get better at telling your (or your business) story, you get better at life.
On Sept. 9, we're breaking down how to do just that at the Fintech Is Femme Creator Summit.

Loved speaking with Nicole Casperson, Founder & CEO of Fintech Is Femme, for her feature with Forbes - about insights for women in fintech building their personal brands.
I won an award some time ago and I was asked to speak in the first ever Women in Leadership Forum in Russia. I was asked to do a TED style talk, and they clearly thought I must be very good in my speaking since I am recognised as a Top Woman in Technology in the UK. I was, however, deeply horrified, and whilst I wrote down my truly inspirational story about going from washing toilets in McDonalds Russia to winning awards in the UK, I could not deliver this talk in front of the audience in a confident way.
I was extremely uncomfortable in front of the camera. They said they got 130,000 people coming, including various Ministers or Finance and Economy which was of course terrible. I had Miss Russia prepare me for this, including suggesting what I wear, which is always a plus with public speaking.
Anyway, I did do this talk, although it was deeply uncomfortable. Then I decided to train for public speaking so that I am more confident. I decided that I will train with a lady in Tumen & a lady in Rostov, which are like small towns in Russia where a public speaking course costs 50-100 pounds for the full course for 2-3 months. Only issue was that I had to get up at 5 pm to join my training sessions - which was completely in the dark in winter, and which greatly annoyed my husband.
The first talk I did in front of live audience was the TED Conferences talk, which got over 500,000 views, was translated in 23 languages & became the top 10 most viewed TEDx talks globally that month.

Meet Liza Adams, celebrating her Filipino heritage!
Liza, is an AI Advisor & Fractional CMO. As an AI advisor, she inspires go-to-market executives and teams with what's possible through real-life AI use cases, develops #AIstrategies, and assists in planning #AIoperations as they transition from exploration to integration. As a fractional CMO, she provides seasoned #marketingleadership and #strategicexpertise, driving marketing team success by aligning with and meeting overall business objectives.⚡
🌸 Liza’s perspective on the significance of #AAPI representation in her profession & what it means to her:
“I am deeply committed to elevating the strategic value of marketing and using business as a force for good. I work diligently to do my part in ensuring that AI benefits everyone and avoids causing harm.
Believing in AI’s transformative power, I advocate for including diverse voices in these crucial discussions to ensure it serves all of humanity. As a Filipino woman executive in tech, I work to highlight often "invisible" Asian cultures—like Laotian, Cambodian, Filipino, and Hmong—traditionally lumped under the monolithic category of "Asians."
My goal is to empower and inspire future leaders, particularly those who look like me, to be visible, share their insights, and influence decisions.”
-❓- How does your collaboration with organizations like Access Mode, known for their dedication to diversity and inclusion, contribute to your journey in creating meaningful change and fostering inclusivity within your industry?
“My work with Access Mode has greatly improved my efforts to promote inclusivity in business and tech. I led an applied AI workshop for diverse CEO entrepreneurs from Black, Latino, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities, sharing practical guidelines on using AI to adapt to changing consumer needs. This experience let me show these amazing leaders how to build AI into their companies to better reach and engage with their target customers, acknowledging and using the unique cultural perspectives they bring.”
💡 When it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion:
“Partnering with Access Mode has been key in advocating for diversity. It helps empower new entrepreneurs from a variety of #BIPOC backgrounds to use AI to gain efficiencies and achieve sustainable growth, ensuring their innovations reflect and serve their diverse communities.”
Thank you Liza for your contributions and representation in the AI and marketing sectors. Your strategic guidance, responsible AI practices, and seasoned leadership are not only drivers for success but also setting a remarkable standard for innovation and excellence!

Reflecting on Japanese board dynamics: Beyond traditional boundaries
Practical insight: There's an often-overlooked talent pool of professionals who deeply understand Japan: non-Japanese who have lived in Japan extensively, speak the language fluently, and intimately know the business ecosystem. These aren't just external observers, but professionals who bridge cultural and strategic gaps, bringing nuanced global perspectives while respecting Japanese corporate contexts.
Tracy Gopal, CFA's ongoing advocacy for diverse representation for Japanese boards continues to evolve. From championing women, especially non-Japanese women, to now embracing broader international talent in Japanese corporate governance.
Speaking of transformative forces, nobody has impacted Japanese corporate governance more profoundly than Nicholas Benes, whose relentless crusade has been instrumental in reshaping board practices in Japan.
The future of strategic leadership for Japanese comapnies isn't about tokenism, but about genuine cognitive diversity that drives innovation and global competitiveness.

Is your IT department a cost – or an enabler? 🌐
In today’s landscape, IT is the backbone of nearly every organization, yet it's often viewed merely as an expense, and occasionally an enigma rather than a strategic partner driving business forward.
I've noticed that IT departments still seem to be prone to the negativity bias, where minor failures overshadow years of successful operation. Perhaps it's because many of us in IT are more introverted and less comfortable promoting our achievements, especially when challenges arise. Often, these challenges require solutions beyond technical means, and this is where effective IT management becomes crucial to ensure proper planning, resource allocation, and support from the business side.
These ongoing challenges will be key topics at the upcoming Lithuanian IT Executives Conference organized by the Lithuanian IT Managers' Club (Lietuvos IT vadovų klubas | CIO.LT) on December 3.
I’m excited to explore a range of subjects, including IT transformation management in Lithuania's e-government sector, which, by the way, impressively ranks 8th out of 35 European countries in the European Commission’s e-Government Scoreboard. This is a testament to our public e-services being both user-friendly and advanced, benefiting citizens and businesses alike.
Other discussions will explore IT trends often debated among professionals and practical questions about the business implications when an IT manager departs for any reason. I am also relieved that AI is not overshadowing the agenda. While it is definitely important and not to be ignored, I am glad to see that other critical topics are not being drowned in the vast ocean of AI. This balanced focus ensures we continue to innovate and develop across diverse areas.
As a member of the Lithuanian IT Managers' Club, I look forward to the insights and ideas that will emerge from this event.
Perhaps it is time we rethink how we perceive IT in our businesses. Shifting our perspective could unlock potentials we have not yet imagined.
