In 2023 approximately 90% of Kamoa-Kakula’s concentrates were shipped to international customers from the ports of Durban in South Africa and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, where an average round-trip takes between approximately 40 and 50 days.   The distance from Kamoa-Kakula in the DRC to the port of Lobito in Angola is approximately half that compared with the port of Durban and transportation by rail is both quicker and significantly less energy-intensive.   Once fully active, the Lobito Atlantic Railway Corridor is expected to significantly improve the logistics costs and reduce the Scope 3 emissions carbon footprint of Kamoa-Kakula copper exports.   The development of Ivanhoe’s current and future copper discoveries within the Western Foreland basin will also greatly benefit from the Lobito Corridor.   #whyafrica #africa #whymineafrica #copper #mining #cobalt #ports #rail #lobito #angola #zambia #DRC #criticalminerals #africanmining #mininginafrica #whyafricaroadtrips     https://lnkd.in/dmUjcQsM

Hi Leon, I saw a post yesterday that the first shipment of 1,100 tons of copper arrived in Lobito on 31 December and it took 8 days. Leon Louw, The train is the way to go, raw materials endowment and utilization must have a deeper handshake going forward. Of course, such handshake could bring to sharp focus, issues surrounding natural resources exploitation and socio-economic advancement of Africa. Now my question is, how can #africa benefit maximally from her endowment, is it by instituting nationalization overt or covertly or, is it by companies operating in Africa intentionally through self-censoring ensures that the value chain are carried out near to asset location as much as possible to avoid forcing the hand of government; Panama style or risk local revolt; Niger style? What is your opinion on Indonesian model that demand full mechanization and optimization in the country?

Leon Louw Ivanhoe is sitting pretty with the first mover advantage on this extension to the west and infrastructure benefit within this Copper Triangle of Angola-DRC-Zambia.
