Great to have Stephen Flory from Amps Wine Mechants visit us Thetford Farm Barn. The support they have given in the last decade is a true reflection of their passion, dedication and knowledge. Its no wonder they have so many awards under their belt. 🍷 😍 But I can't imagine it has been an easy ride of late with the struggles the hopsitality industry have faced, and are yet to. The #budget2024 in March is looming, and the road ahead has become even more arduous for restaurants, hotels, bars, and other establishments. These changes add layers of complexity at a time when many are already facing unprecedented challenges. As a team and business deeply passionate about hospitality, we have been considering the challenge of how the industry can be more inclusive and provide life-changing opportunities for individuals across the whole value chain. And, how can we embed hospitality into food systems that are more sustainable for our planet? Whilst overseeing all F&B at COP28, we took the opportunity to investigate this issue with @Alexander Smalls, @Anahita Dhondy, @Conor Spacey, @Paul Newnham, and myself at a round table event hosted by @Jane Witherspoon. The result of our discussion, along with significant further analysis by @Jim Kersey, is our Sustainability and Inclusivity in Hospitality report. This report outlines the significant challenges we need to overcome to create inclusive and sustainable opportunities while also highlighting the clear benefits of attracting and retaining talent in our incredible industry. In response, we have decided to create ‘Human Hospitality,’ a not-for-profit dedicated to: - Providing life-changing opportunities in hospitality to people from all walks of life. - Identifying barriers to and solutions for executing sustainable business development goals for the industry. - Positioning and promoting hospitality as a sustainable career choice and making the industry accessible for all, to enable greater advancement of the UN’s SDGs. She was Head of ESG and Market Access – probably the most important role in wine other than the big $399k leadership one. Did she resign? The Wine Australia media release just says that she was being "farewelled". We checked with Wine Australia; did Triggs resign? "Appreciate the question," senior comms manager Hannah Bentley says. "As background, generally we don’t go into detail when a member of our executive team leaves. We’re focused on celebrating some of Rachel’s many achievements for our sector and on making the transition as smooth as possible for all of our customers." When Martin Cole was appointed CEO of Wine Australia two years ago, Triggs apparently came second. Triggs seemed to be the frontrunner for the top job; from the feedback we've had she was everyone's favourite. She was the right person for the job at the right time. It was expected that Triggs would one day run the whole show. But now she's gone. All that talent, all that industry knowledge and all those communication skills down the drain. Triggs would have been a great leader of the Australian wine industry. We hope she has another crack at it one day. We have not spoken to Triggs. There's known to have been some tension at Wine Australia and this is perhaps the culmination of it. Sad. The wine industry is on its knees and we need Wine Australia firing on all cylinders. AWRI's feedback to the One Grape and Wine Sector highlights the simple fact that this organisation is a lot better connected with the industry and understands the issues we face. It is well articulated and captures what the industry needs to address. AND I am sure they did not have to engage a consultancy firm to write it for them. An interesting report compiled with the help of FoodSpace Where food was FINALLY at the table at COP. 30% out of 40% of the worlds food waste is derived from the hospitality sector. I have worked with B Corps and B Lab for about 15 years and one of my takeaways from this great article published by The New York Times and written by Eric Asimov is how competition among wineries has accelerated adoption of and adherence to the movement in that industry. The dynamic is familiar: when one industry player becomes certified, the pressure on their competitors ramps up thanks to healthy competition. And becoming certified is not an exercise of being 'dusted and done.' Once the values of stakeholder capitalism take root, companies thrive on continual improvement.
