Confession time: I don’t particularly care for nursing bumper stickers. 🤷♂️ I might have caught your attention with a dash of 'clickbait', but I promise, it's for a good reason. 👇 As a fellow nurse, let me assure you, I’m not some disenchanted nurse who’s so jaded towards the profession that I want to put down the public image. I’m also not a nursing influencer looking for clicks by providing “hot takes” or controversial statements. Quite the opposite. My feelings stem from a deep-seated passion for our profession. 💗 😷 Nursing holds a special place in society, renowned for its reliability and compassionate care amidst the complexities of modern healthcare. We should wear our nursing pride like a badge of honor and share our stories with enthusiasm. 🎖 🏆 Yet, I've noticed a troubling trend: the celebration of nursing often gets pigeonholed into bedside roles. It's as if the only valid depiction of a nurse is one providing direct patient care and said bumper stickers. 💉 🤔 But as nurses, we know better. Our profession has evolved far beyond the days of being physician handmaidens. Today, we chart diverse career paths, from leadership roles to advanced practice. 🚀 🎓 So here's my point: let's redefine how we celebrate nursing. Let's honor nurses as the innovators, data experts, patient advocates, and the clinical stakeholders that they are. Nurses do and always have deserved a seat at the table. We need to start building those opportunities or ‘chairs’ into our academia and professional onboarding. 👩⚕️ 🏥 It's time to pave the way for nurses to thrive in all aspects of their profession. Let's celebrate nurses in every capacity, whether at the bedside or beyond🎇 #nursingpride #beyondthebedside #nurseinnovators #nursingevolution #celebratenurses #nurseleadership #nursingcareer #nursingcommunity #nurseadvocates #nurseempowerment #nursesonlinkedin #healthcareleadership American Nurses Association American Organization for Nursing Leadership American Nurse ANA-OHIO National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) National League for Nursing National Student Nurses' Association Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing American Board of Nursing Specialties American Academy of Nursing

Wholeheartedly agree!! I have this EXACT discussion with my students about being Nurse Educators. I’ve never recalled ANYONE in Nursing school advertising nursing education as an advanced nursing degree. Its ALWAYS “become an NP”. I LOVE my NP’s, but I have NEVER had any desire to be an NP. I’ve always wanted to go into education even while in nursing school. I’m totally disheartened that I couldn’t find a great EdD program in my state for nursing education, but instead a slew of DNP programs. Although I’m forever grateful for my knowledge gained and valuable experience as a traditional bedside nurse for many years, I am also a huge voice for letting people know that nursing is FAR more than injections and bedpans. As I tell my students, anything that you love in life you can find in nursing. There’s literally NO ceiling or box for nursing. I encourage my students to think beyond the bedside if that’s their desire.

Wholeheartedly agree!!!! Do not placate or celebrate nurses with ice cream and cookies, but by showcasing their work, their projects, their accomplishments. We have come so far from the days of nursing is only at the bedside.

Frankly, not sure I’ve seen any of these stickers. Definitely for promoting nursing beyond the bedside. My nursing foundational skills of assessment & critical thinking have served me well as I ventured beyond “traditional “ nursing roles. I’ve experienced so much joy, challenges & adventures over the years and I don’t expect that to ever end! #nursingforward #nursesonboards #celebratenurses

Having had the pleasure to work with and learn from Nurses for over 37 years I am pleased to see the uptick in their deserved respect and admiration. And not a moment too soon! Thank you and congratulations on elevating your profession beyond so-called “physician handmaidens” to invaluable assets to pt safety, assessment, and recovery!

Very well said! We can also add that direct patient care can and is done in many other settings and not only at the typically thought of hospital shift floor nursing.

I'm just laughing because I would be so embarrassed to have one of these on my car. It's too close to a walking advertisement, like having a spotlight on yourself. Sometimes incognito is better.

Yes! I will never forget someone saying I wasn’t a “real nurse” because I no longer worked at the bedside. Very short sighted. I’m proud of my evolution and that of my profession!
