Q: What does a Belgian public administration #AI discussion have to do with a London-based financial consultancy or anyone else? A: Global replication of AI’s plausible collaboration with humans. #ArtificialIntelligence is increasingly impacting public #data, behavior and interaction, observed FARI - AI for the Common Good Institute, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and speakers. Examples cited included: 🗳️ the improvement of a local court’s efficiency in scheduling its cases to inside an hour from the current 3-month human-tasked effort; 🗳️ attempting to avoid bias in human resources management by skill-word matching; 🗳️ reducing an administrator’s workload by 7 hours; 🗳️ offering a city’s multilingual population to be served by a bot communicating in a native language; and 🗳️ allowing a public broadcaster to incentivize its audience to consider a diverse range of programs to ensure broadened thought. Despite the efficiencies, presenters recognized the challenges of attaining agreement even between one nation’s regional administrations, and reiterated a need to ensure artificial intelligence does not harm humans or their continued employment, with individuals’ data effectively protected and all efforts made to avoid AI hallucinations being mistaken for sound advice. The #EUAIAct was exemplified as an attempt, despite its argued imperfections, to address such concerns. Whilst a number of presenters highlighted the need to consider ‘sustainability,’ this author urges urgent consideration of the #investment opportunity and requirement linked to AI’s reliance on #EnergyConsumption including: 📌 How much energy is needed to support the exponential AI training and usage in EU/UK nations or globally? 📌 How much does this increased energy infrastructure buildout sit within nations’ infrastructure plans, if at all, given AI for public administration | use is somewhat nascent? 📌 What is the cost of this increased infrastructure and how much can government and/or the private sector — #BlendedFinance — afford to spend v. other needs such as healthcare, defense, decarbonization, etc.? 📌 What is the probable impact on the cost and availability of #electricity to the average citizen? 📌 Is there even sufficient energy infrastructure, grid capacity, balancing services, storage … and of course generation … to support AI training and use v. everyday needs? How many communities will miss out? 📌 How quickly can generators which harness #renewableenergy be built to support this previously unplanned for energy consumption? 📌 What role do other forms of low-carbon electricity generation, e.g. #nuclear, have to play, noting International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s inaugural nuclear energy summit was held a day earlier?
