Are technical textiles a challenge to leather? Technical textiles present a significant challenge to the leather industry due to their innovative properties and versatility. They offer alternatives that are often more sustainable, adaptable, and sometimes more cost-effective than traditional leather. The leather industry, facing environmental and ethical concerns, is compelled to innovate and improve sustainability practices. Advances in materials science have led to the development of textiles that mimic leather's aesthetic and functional qualities, pushing the leather sector to evolve and adopt more environmentally friendly and socially responsible production methods. Are technical textiles a challenge to shoe upper leather? Technical textiles indeed present a challenge to traditional shoe upper leather, offering innovative alternatives that cater to a growing demand for sustainable and vegan options. A study comparing the technical performance of leather and various alternatives, including Desserto®, Pinatex®, and others, found that while none matched leather's universal performance, some excelled in specific properties. This suggests a potential shift in the footwear industry as these materials continue to evolve and improve. However, the unique multilayer structure of leather, which contributes to its performance, has not yet been replicated by synthetic or bio-based materials. Are technical textiles a challenge to automotive leather? Technical textiles are indeed presenting a challenge to traditional automotive leather, especially as the industry seeks innovative solutions to meet new demands for sustainability, efficiency, and performance. The shift towards lightweight materials to reduce emissions has increased the use of textiles in vehicles, from 20 kg per mid-size car in 2000 to 35 kg today. Additionally, the development of textiles and composites as alternatives to metal underbodies is a significant trend. With the automotive industry undergoing a major transformation, suppliers are adapting their strategies to embrace these changes.

Every year, factories produce thousands of metres of excess fabric known as deadstock. These high-quality materials often go unused due to overestimations or changes in production needs. Instead of letting them sit in warehouses or end up in landfills, we can use this surplus fabric for production runs. Producing apparel with upcycled fabric can be great for your brand.
