The young white male founders of Giant Tech are not the primary targets, online or offline, of harassment, abuse, sexual assault, racism, violence, rape, revenge porn. So they didn't, and don't, proactively design for the prevention of any of those things on their platforms, and we see the results of that around us every day. Those of us most at risk every day - women, Black people, people of color, LGBTQ+, the disabled - design and build safe spaces and safe experiences. But we don't get funded, which is why we've not yet seen how much better, safer, kinder and nicer the world is for all of us when THOSE platforms operate at scale. Today marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a pivotal moment in 1969 that ignited the LGBTQIA+ rights movement. While we celebrate the significant progress made, we acknowledge that discrimination and social stigma still affect many lives. In order to continue the fight for equality and understanding, AI technology also gives its contribution with the introduction of the new project "AI Comes Out of the Closet." This online study, created by MIT graduates Daniel Pillis and Pat Pataranutaporn, uses AI-generated dialogue and virtual characters to simulate real-world scenarios that LGBTQIA+ individuals face, especially the challenges of coming out in the workplace. By merging technological innovation with a dedication to inclusivity, this initiative aims to foster empathy, understanding, and advocacy skills, contributing to the ongoing struggle for equality both legally and socially. “There's something about queer culture that celebrates the artificial through kitsch, camp, and performance," says D. What That Data Do? I’ve often found that data is used as a tool of white supremacy, a way to deny actual problems while driving solutions toward manufactured crisis. In the spirit of Aunt Audre we’re using the master’s tools to dismantle the house that white supremacy built. . . In honor of #Juneteenth we’re proud to make #BlackFacts, findings from a unique research project available today. This first-of-its-kind national survey of Black people in the United States disrupts myths and centers facts, including 65 percent of Black people who said they consider themselves “supporters of Black LGBTQ+ people and rights,” with 57 percent of the supporters saying they were “churchgoers.” . . 🔍 AI and Deepfakes: Unveiling the Uncomfortable Reality 🔐 Did you know that a startling 96 percent of deepfake videos are created without consent, specifically targeting women? This alarming statistic comes from a recent study conducted by DeepTrace Labs, a prominent cybersecurity company. According to a report from U.N. Women, individuals who face multiple forms of discrimination—such as women of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women with disabilities—are particularly vulnerable to technology-facilitated gender-based violence. Young people want adults to know that "the world is changing," "we are the future," and "AI is the future." Teen and Young Adult Perspectives on Generative AI 🤖💬 A new report by Common Sense Media, Hopelab, and the Center for Digital Thriving sheds light on how young people ages 14-22 perceive and use generative AI. Here are the key findings: 1️⃣ Half of young people have used generative AI, but only 4% are daily users. Black and Latinx youth are twice as likely as white youth to use it weekly. 2️⃣ Top uses: getting information (53%) and brainstorming ideas (51%). Black and Latinx users are significantly more likely to leverage AI for various activities. 3️⃣ One-third of non-users believe AI wouldn't be helpful. Reasons vary by race, LGBTQ+ identity, and age. 4️⃣ 41% expect both positive and negative personal impacts. LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to anticipate negative effects vs. cisgender/straight peers. 5️⃣ Excitement centers on AI's potential for school, work, creativity, and human advancement. Concerns include job loss, privacy, intellectual property theft, and misinformation. 6️⃣ Teens want adults to know AI is the future, but perspectives range from optimism to apprehension. Some use AI to learn and create, while others worry about cheating, bullying and inappropriate content. 7️⃣ The report underscores the importance of engaging diverse youth voices in shaping the responsible development and use of generative AI. 🗣️ #GenerativeAI #YouthPerspectives #DigitalWellbeing #EdTech #ResponsibleAI

This research confirms that tech-facilitated gender-based violence is an urgent matter with harmful impacts on LGBTIQ+ people's rights. Similarly to what my team and I found in our research on TfGBV in Thailand (link in comments), tech tools are a double-edged sword for women and LGBTIQ+ activists: while they are vital for connection, engagement, and activism; their use often exposes them to increased risks of harm and comes at a high price to pay.
