On behalf of Life Science Cares New York, thank you to KiiLN- Keystone for Incubating Innovation in Life Sciences Network and Merina Varghese, @Ilse Daehn, @Gabriella Casalena, @Yana Zorina, and Nicole McKnight, PhD for your generous donation. Your support will advance STEM education in NYC. Congratulations on your achievements with KiiLN and the impact you've made. We look forward to building the life sciences community together in New York City. Thank you Alston & Bird for hosting the event to celebrate this transition. Keystone for Incubating Innovation in Life Sciences Network (KiiLN), founded in 2012 by five Mount Sinai postdoctoral fellows, set out to promote the success of early-stage biotechnology start-ups, contributing to entrepreneurial life science innovation. It has been a cornerstone for biotech startups in NYC, receiving funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration and press coverage in Xconomy, Crain's New York Business, and the New York Business Journal. From 2016 to 2019, KiiLN co-organized the annual Foundation conference, and since 2019, the ISMMS-KiiLN Postdoctoral Entrepreneurship Award has provided $10,000 grants to entrepreneurial postdocs. They are excited to pass on $20,000 to @Life Science Cares NewYork to continue their mission and support the next generation of entrepreneurs. #lifesciences #community #thanks #ittakesavillage #networkofgood

Being part of the change! 🌟 Our CEO, Dr Katerina Spranger, attended the launch of the new ‘USIT (University Spinout Investment Terms) for Software’ guide this week, which #OxHB was consulted on. USIT for Software is an expert guide for the efficient formation of software spin-outs from university research. It was created by world-leading universities (including University of Oxford and UCL Business Ltd), investors and professional service firms, with the aim of boosting the number of software spinouts from academic innovations, by recommending faster deals with less friction, built for rapid scaling 🚀 The initiative is led by TenU, an international collaboration of ten leading technology transfer offices, formed to share effective practices in research commercialisation with governments and higher education communities. The event was launched by the Lord Mayor of London, and attended by many influential figures, including The Minister of State for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the University of Oxford Vice Chancellor. Key takeaways from the event: 👉 Software startups are different from “traditional” hardware startups, including shorter development times, comparatively lower initial funding requirements, and need for rapid growth 👉 With those differentiations in mind, the new guide includes guidance on what a positive deal should look like for university spin-out companies, and provides advice in areas such as equity share and IP 👉 It will help founders streamline the spin out process and create a favourable structure from the outset for all parties involved, thereby increasing the chances of success Download the guide here ⬇ https://lnkd.in/e23RKqJV Download the equivalent guide for innovations outside software here ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eMc-ZVKs #neuroradiology #neurosurgery #neurovascular #healthinnovation

"As academics, we don't like questions" - it was a brilliant insight coming out of Friday's workshop. PhDs strive to do everything they can to provide all of the necessary information required on a given subject matter. As a result, we end up with presentations that are more text book than pitch. And this ultimately scares off investors and audiences, vs. enticing them to learn more. A great presentation should support your efforts and help bring your ideas to life in a clear and engaging way. Your deck should be designed to start a conversation, persuade, and add credibility. Whether it's a sale, fundraiser, or partnership, you will be the one who ends up closing the deal at the end of the day - not your materials. Don’t be afraid to start a conversation. https://lnkd.in/effmqY3C #Scaleup #Startup #Biotech #Lifescience #HealthTech #UK
Last week we were thrilled to host Alex Gould of Long Story Short for a bespoke 'Life's a Pitch' workshop. Entrepreneurs, founders, academics and early career researchers from accelerators, incubators, and company builders around Cambridge including the Sanger Start-Up School, and beyond Cambridge - including as far as Newcastle - came along to hear what Alex had to say. He related pitching to speed-dating with the focus on getting to the second date and emphasised the importance of story telling because "the right story can help impact" and “emotion is part of every great story”. Alex's experience of working in the UK and US means he understands how to pitch for the different audiences and he said that the key to pitching is the "need to understand your audience". Huge thanks for their help in coordinating this event must go to Jennie R., Emily Boyce, Natalie Duggett, Francois Meullenet, Marco Delise, PhD, Alexandra Huener, Emma Fox, Jo Mills and Sam Dods. Author: WHEALTHSPAN / Keynote Speaker, Lecturer, Longevity & Communities Innovator/ President, Home Ideations / Past President, National Aging in Place Council / American College of Lifestyle Medicine
Professor Dan Winer, MD, heads up the Winer Lab at the #Buck #Institute for #Research on #Aging and is affiliated with the University of Toronto and the University of Southern California. Dr. Winer’s work on #gastroimmunology (#gastrointestinal and #immune systems) has received numerous awards and is regarded as one of the top #microbiome researchers in the U.S. Dr. Winer’s research has demonstrated the key role the microbiome plays in health and disease, and its role in aging. The body produces fewer critical molecules that support #signaling, leading to accumulated dysfunction with age. Winer discovered a way to help preserve the levels of these molecules in the GI tract and positively impact immune function. Winer has invented a proprietary natural ingredient blend that targets the gut microbiome. A preliminary human trial in Europe demonstrated significant promise. Together with Nicholas Tubach, the mastermind behind building the team, the two co-founded a company, “How to Slow Time, Inc.” to bring the blend to market. They recruited an all-star team of international experts, including Jan Scisinski, Maryann Walsh, Amine Zorgani, Bill Andrews, Marco Quarta, Zachary Pogue, and Scott Fulton. The team is actively raising funds for a clinical human trial in the U.S. in 2024 and preparing to bring the Propion product to market in 2025. They recently launched a crowdfunding opportunity for early investors using SAFEs (Simple Agreement for Future Equity), a method developed in 2013 and used by top Silicon Valley startups, raising money from accredited angel investors. Launched just days ago, it is already well on its way to reaching the $50,000 goal to fund the human clinical trial. SAFEs make it easy for consumers to become #angel #investors with opportunities to make significant returns on a modest investment by getting involved early. Your son has a strong village dialect: he is not ready for higher education. Said the school director to my parents. WOW. Bad news. Especially, when your son is the first one, aiming for a higher education. Luckily my parents didn't believe him. My mother working in a Kindergarden and my father as electrician. Both with a strong believe in government and authorities. Our family history full of farmers and craftsmen. Statistics say, the odds are 4 to 1 against me. In Germany you call me a #Nichtakademikerkind. Academics or higher education in family & friends: Nope. Luckily my parents didn't believe this school director. They had trust, faith. They've supported me and enabled me to get an higher education. Grades were good enough - dialect didn't matter in natural sciences and engineering. Higher Education - check! The outcome of our fight against the authorities: Motivational boost if someone says NO to me. German Innovation Award. German Founders Award. A PhD in biophysics. A wonderful life. A strong belief, that I can achieve a lot in life. When people support me. Never stop believing! How about you? What is your story? #biotechnology #entrepreneurship #startup ————————— I am Philipp - founder, CEO & business angel.
