As a follow-up to our perspective a few weeks ago on The New York Times article, “An Architect Who Builds Community Wins the Pritzker Prize”, we've been inspired yet again by the recent Bloomberg piece, "Dallas Is Looking for Design That Can Tackle Loneliness." One of our group strategy directors, Hugo Lamb, gives his perspective. How can it be possible that in a city, in a place of infinite possibility, where millions of interactions take place every second, we can be lonely? Cities by their very nature are the ultimate engineering of the social environment. They are monuments to our inherent drive to connect, to be together, to be everything but lonely.Yet loneliness is a growing problem in every city around the world. Recent research from the University of Sydney has placed some responsibility on the design of cities. But, in my view, it is the speed of cities that is the problem. Cities move at the speed of culture, the speed of industry, the speed of the modern world. They have been rapidly accelerating in the information age, and the moment we look up from our phones we feel left behind.The urban interventions that are profiled in this thought-provoking piece by Bloomber’s CityLab each have their merits, but perhaps don’t acknowledge the bigger issue: we aren’t placing the same value on the slow spaces within cities as we do the fast spaces. Slow spaces are where we learn to be social. They are intrinsic to our wellbeing, and the wellbeing of our community. To design them well, we need to think holistically and in detail. These are complex platforms for people, and they deserve our best architecture and imagination. The redevelopment of the iconic Albert Hall in Launceston has entered an exciting new phase. Led by the expertise of SHAPE Australia, the project is transitioning from the demolition stage to the structural stage, marking significant progress in transforming this historic landmark into a modern meeting and exhibition space while preserving its rich heritage. The project is jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments, with the Federal Government pledging $11 million as part of the Launceston City Deal, with an additional $5 million from the Launceston City Council's capital works budget. This funding underscores the Albert Hall’s importance as a historical and community asset. At SHAPE, we are renowned for delivering complex projects that blend heritage conservation with modern design, such as the Albert Hall Redevelopment. The project is now progressing from demolition to the structural stage, showcasing our ability to preserve Albert Hall’s classical Victorian elements while introducing contemporary amenities. This balance aims to maintain the building's historical charm and embodied carbon, thus prolonging its lifecycle. The redevelopment will modernise Albert Hall and integrate it seamlessly into the surrounding City Park, fulfilling a long-held vision for the site. Key enhancements include: - Ground Floor - A new reception area, foyer, café, and function kitchen. - First Floor - A new foyer and meeting room. - Stage One and Two - Upgrades to heating, meeting rooms, toilets, lighting, and audio-visual capabilities, now moving towards the structural improvements. - Stage Three - Civil works for a striking extension fronting the City Park, set to begin later this year. As the redevelopment of Albert Hall progresses, it stands as a testament to Launceston’s dedication to preserving its historical landmarks while adapting to contemporary needs. By blending heritage with modern functionality, SHAPE alongside TERROIR and the City of Launceston Council, is ensuring that Albert Hall remains a beloved and integral part of the community, ready to host events and exhibitions well into the future.
