“If you build somewhere that has enough gravitas and enough pull, people will come. It’s not just another restaurant, it’s a venue that will be a global conversation, rather than just a local conversation.” That’s Interior Design Director Brenton Smith in the The Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on our interior design for Prefecture 48. The new dining precinct is located on the western edge of the Sydney CBD. It brings together six unique venues under one roof. All offer different takes on contemporary Japanese culture and cuisine. It also breathes new life into the heritage Foley Brother building, which was originally a workaday Victorian warehouse. It’s an unlikely yet inventive refurbishment and a testament to good citymaking. Prefecture 48 creates a new destination, in the heart of Sydney, that people can enjoy for years to come. Our proposal for a five-star hotel in South Brisbane has officially lodged for planning approval. Located on Merivale Street, this 15-storey development will elevate the precinct into a premier destination to stay. The architecture draws directly from the precinct. Its materiality is inspired by Brisbane Tuff, a local volcanic rock, and its form takes cues from the Queensland Art Gallery's elegant postmodernism. The rectilinear façade and articulated massing make for a striking expression. On the ground, a new landscaped laneway links the hotel to nearby Musgrave Park and the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. There, people can enjoy a coffee, eat in the hotel cafe, or simply walk between Merivale and Cordelia Streets and onto the park or waterfront. Inside, the hotel offers luxury at every level, with rooms on floors 2-11, exclusive suites on level 12, and dedicated wellness and dining spaces on the top floors. The rooftop experience, featuring an infinity pool, spa, and panoramic city views, promises to be nothing short of spectacular. “Every time you walk through, there’s another beautiful surprise—another bit of gold dust. Delight comes from not knowing what’s around the corner.” – Brenton Smith, Director, Bates Smart. Prefecture 48, Sydney’s newest six-in-one Japanese dining hub, is officially open! Home to four restaurants, a patisserie and a whisky bar, our design team has crafted distinct narratives for each venue. Each space highlights the essence of its food offering and the best of Japanese culture, art, fashion and design. Pyrmont Registry is the new workplace and wedding venue for the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages. Relocated from Chippendale to Wharf 10, the building cleverly adapted as a dual-purpose space for both Department staff and the public. Visitors are immersed in a tranquil space defined by the materiality. The design highlights the significance of water, reflecting its eternal and transformative nature. Soft textiles drape from the ceiling suggesting the rhythmic motion of water, and muted timbers complement the concrete shell of the wharf’s architecture. “The state government should think about Central Station in terms of improving public amenity and the public good rather than what will make money.” That’s the expert opinion of Managing Director Philip Vivian. This weekend The Sydney Morning Herald broke the news that the NSW Government will shelve plans to develop over Central Station. Over the past few years, Philip has led the design of multiple alternative visions for Central. This includes an idea to relocate Allianz Stadium, in Moore Park, to over Central Station, as well as moving Prince Alfred Park to over the rail lines, to open opportunities for good public space and high density development. Both proposals activate Central Station, knit together the surrounding neighbourhoods, and responsibly densify the precinct. As Sydney searches for good solutions to guide its urban growth, rethinking sites like Central Station will be key to making our city a great place to live, for decades to come.
