"Is School Choice a Civil Rights Issue?" Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently asked this most important question. At Lifelong Learning, we believe all students should have access to a quality, tailored education, regardless of their racial, ethnic, economic or social background. When families are allowed to choose a free, public education that works best for them, we are ensuring equity. It’s important for educators to help break down the specific challenges and barriers faced by individual students and provide personalized support to help them succeed. https://lnkd.in/eUwEfMcA

The journey toward desegregation in the United States is marked by significant milestones, each representing a step forward in the long fight for civil rights and equality. From the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, which declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional, to the subsequent efforts to enforce and realize the promise of desegregation across the nation. Here are some pivotal moments in the timeline of desegregation: 1954: Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision 1957: Integration of Little Rock Central High School 1960: New Orleans school desegregation 1964: Civil Rights Act passed These moments, among many others, highlight the progress made and the challenges that persist in achieving true educational equity. Let's honor the courage of those who fought for desegregation and continue to work towards a fully inclusive education system. The Rights of parents in choosing a SCHOOL for their kids The contemporary arrogance of the Politicians is astounding as they debate about Faith based education to impose THEIR PRINCIPLES upon those Parents and their Children regarding what they must be taught and who might teach them in Faith related schools. Surely it should be the RIGHTS OF PARENTS WHO PAY FOR EDUCATION ABOVE THEIR TAXES to have the right to know and be promised that the school curriculum is consistent with the faith they follow and that a school's teaching staff are of similar Character. Equally if Politicians wish to IMPOSE upon those Taxpayer funded schools that they control. The curriculum and staffing rules that are best described as Laissez-faire let them legislate accordingly but ensure that Parents are informed. But in no circumstances should extraneous Laws be imposed UPON PARENTS RIGHTS to choose otherwise FOR THEIR CHILDREN. But the debate surrounds the rights of every activist in the system but NEVER the Parents. OR PUT SIMPLY THERE ARE NO SOCIAL RIGHTS FOR TEACHERS ABOVE THOSE OF PARENTS

HISTORICAL TRUTH MUST HAPPEN. In the new year of January 2024, my own question is "why would this lesson plan raise such a question?" My State of Texas tried once to rewrite school texts books to called enslaved Africans as farm workers. The current notion of revisionist and recreated history becomes dangerous and diminishes real historical facts. It seems like the anti DEI and anti CRT activists seek to deny structural and systemic racism has never happened in the United States. Back to raising the question of whether enslavement should have been legal. It could only be legal when human beings are considered property. Therefore it becomes a property rights issue and not anything else. One should have serious concerns about this School District and School Districts that don't see a problem with lesson plan like this. #education #historyfacts #educationmatters https://lnkd.in/gvTkvPeU

Thanks for starting this spirited conversation, Kendall! I just received an EdChoice newsletter which describes their analysis of current national school choice numbers and it shows that full quarter of K-12 students are now being home-schooled, attending charter, private or magnet schools or using a scholarship or voucher program, so the Teacher’ Union-run monopoly government schools are finally facing a real challenge. Unfortunately, Minnesota and other Blue states are refusing to break the monopoly, but 10 other states have implemented full parental/student choice universally (all are eligible) where the full share of school funding allocated to these students follows them to the education program of their choice. Another 6, and probably Texas too, are likely to follow them soon. Real school choice like this is the way to empower parents and students and force positive change in the public schools as well!

It seems parents are voting with their feet when it comes to alternatives to public school for their children. Even enrollment in preschool has taken a dive nationwide due to the widespread woke agenda (https://lnkd.in/gS88MXP5). However, Harvard Law School professor Elizabeth Bartholet calls for a radical transformation in homeschooling because she dissapproves of the trend and does not believe that parents should have the independence to teach their own children (https://lnkd.in/gwdYGsRp).

Author of BRUTAL MINDS -- Merit, Fairness, Equality, Respect, Results / The views expressed on this site are grounded in academic research and do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer
One of the most important books of the past decade that you probably never heard of is David Randall's "Social Justice Education in America." It is a brilliant takedown of so-called "social justice" on campus -- it exposes the schools and the programs infested with this grotesque facsimile of academia. And Randall offers reforms that, although difficult to execute, would surely rescue higher education from the ideological louts and fake faculty who have gained far too much influence. It's available at the site of the National Association of Scholars, and I offer it in PDF format in the comments below.

Director of Civil Rights/Title IX & ADA Coordinator at the University of Idaho; Educational civil rights and compliance expert, administrator, and consultant
Big win for our K-12 schools coalition with respect to the new Title IX rules: In our comment to the proposed rule, we pointed out how unworkable it would be for the Title IX Coordinator to consult with the entire IEP team on several steps in the Title IX process, as was proposed in the initial rule. The preamble to the final rule explains: "After careful consideration of the public comments received regarding proposed § 106.8(e), the Department clarifies in the final regulations that the Title IX Coordinator is not required to consult with a student’s full IEP team or Section 504 team and maintains that the final regulations strike the appropriate balance between ensuring that consultation between the Title IX Coordinator and a student’s IEP team or Section 504 team occurs at the elementary school and secondary school level, while not stipulating specific parameters of that consultation." The Title IX Coordinator must consult with "one or more members" of a student's IEP team or Section 504 team, as appropriate. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gYPatA5u
