Had a great district meeting today for Dunkin' Boston North. ☕️ 🍩 Love our community because many of us are first, second, or third generation franchisees. The community is unlike anything. Really. What sums up sustained business success? It’s not a one person show. It’s all about team and community and during these meetings it’s a cool reminder. When I see someone always in the spotlight, it makes me think – what about the team? True achievements aren’t solo, they’re a group effort. Here is the sum up in our Dunkin’ life: • Jump in, don’t just oversee. • Build trust, don’t just assume it. • Learn and teach, it’s mutual. • Every role is key. • Celebrate as one. • Lead by doing. • Keep it humble. • Back each other up. • Share the load. • Stick to the mission. Does it really matter? In the bustling rhythm of board meetings, strategic planning, and navigating the ever-evolving market trends, it's easy for us, as business leaders, to become enveloped in the microcosm of our work. However, every so often, an opportunity arises that beckons us to look beyond our corporate confines and make a real, tangible difference in our wider community. Today, I want to discuss such an opportunity—an event that, despite my usual reserve from personal public posts, I feel compelled to share with my peers in the business world.   The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Bend is hosting its annual Steak & Burger Dinner in 2024, an event that not only serves as a celebration of the achievements of our at-risk children and teens but also as a crucial fundraiser to ensure the continuation of support and programs dedicated to their growth and safety. As CEOs and business leaders, our attendance and contributions can make an incredible impact.   Why is this event so significant, and why should it matter to us as business leaders? The answer is twofold. Firstly, the value in having a direct impact on the lives of young individuals is immeasurable. By supporting organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, we contribute to a safe haven for children and teens to learn, grow, and thrive. These are future leaders, innovators, and perhaps future employees who, with the right support, will go on to achieve great things.   Secondly, attending the Steak & Burger Dinner is a testament to our commitment to corporate social responsibility. In an age where consumers and employees alike are increasingly looking to align with companies that genuinely contribute to societal well-being, our participation is a powerful statement. It reflects our values, our vision for a better world, and our belief in giving back to the community that sustains our businesses.   This event is more than just a dinner; it's an opportunity to inspire and be inspired, to connect with fellow leaders who share a vision of making a meaningful difference in the world. I had a great time hosting a NeuGroup DEI session last week to celebrate Juneteenth with not-for-profit CDFI Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and four of their corporate investor partners. LISC's Michelle Spivak and I facilitated a robust roundtable talk with several corporate leaders on their company's efforts to fund initiatives with real impact in underserved communities, including: - DuPont Treasurer Mike Heffernan, CFA - Wayfair Head of IR and Treasury James Lamb, CFA - DICK'S Sporting Goods Director of Treasury Joshua Conklin, CTP and - Costco Wholesale Chief Diversity Officer Alison Francis Takeaways for corporate treasury leaders: - Your childhood zip code still significantly impacts your life and finances - Partnering with experienced organizations like LISC on impactful initiatives in underserved communities can make a tremendous difference. - You can get involved with impact investing through several avenues, including donations, impact bonds, impact funds, and volunteer activities. - The long-term trend is clear: Corporate America plays a crucial role in promoting inclusivity and leveling the playing field. - The earlier you jump in, the earlier you can be a part of the solution. Chris V. Rey, J.D. displays the passion and genuine nature of an authentic leader in this video where he shows the vandalism at Barber Scotia College, an HBCU he was tapped to resurrect. As a leadership expert, I'm completely aware of how difficult it can be to display vulnerability and articulate utter frustration. His unadulterated exhibition shows he cares and leads with passion and conviction. Oftentimes, leaders are imaged as being stoic and resolute and without emotion. The truth is leadership requires a high emotional intelligence IQ (EQ) and empathy for those you lead most especially when those you lead are not necessarily an actualized entity yet. Too many advocacy organizations (driven by funders who exemplify the same problem) prioritize doing what feels good and/or what they know how to do over actually accomplishing their goals. No *one* tactic wins every campaign or policy fight and *no* tactic is a substitute for organizing and leadership development, which requires building robust institutions and programs and actually talking to individual people, in person, repeatedly. But those things do not, in the short term, get an organization's name in the press and do not allow funders to claim a quantifiable return on their investment. The things that *do* accomplish both of those things--staged rallies and demonstrations--do not build power. The upshot of all this is millions of dollars every year paid by philanthropy to make the philanthropists and the orgs they fund feel good while the communities they claim to represent have no more political power than they had the year before. Thinking long and hard about how to get out of this trap and actually move things forward as civic and social institutions fail all around us...
