B.good is known for its fresh burgers made with local ingredients. In their first 8 years, they had 8 outlets in Boston, all company owned. By the next 7 years, they rapidly scaled to a fleet of 69 stores. They chose the franchise route while trying to preserve their ‘fresh and local’ core value. But the company struggled. The scale was a challenge to their ‘fresh and local’ core value. Neither could they preserve their value, nor could they deliver new value. Now they are down to 13 outlets. Testing a Hypothesis with Donkey Dung and Watermelons: Lessons from Sam Walton David Glass recalls his first impression of Walmart, where a guy named Sam Walton had some unconventional retailing ideas: "In those days, word was starting to get out that a guy named Sam Walton had some interesting retailing ideas. So I drove down to see a Walmart opening. It was the worst retail store I had ever seen. Sam had bought a couple of trucks of watermelons and stacked them on the sidewalk. He had a donkey ride out in the parking lot. It was 115 degrees, and the watermelons began to pop, and the donkey began to do what donkeys do. So crap on the floor, basically. And so the donkey crap and the watermelon all mixed together and ran all over the parking lot. And when you went inside the store, the mess just continued, having been tracked in all over the floor. He was a nice fellow, but I wrote him off. It was just terrible. But from Sam's point of view, well, if you're willing to walk through donkey crap mixed with watermelon juice just to save a couple dollars, what will you do when I actually get my act together?” Sam Walton's early experiment might have seemed like a chaotic disaster, but it was a clever test of customer behavior and loyalty. He realized that if customers were willing to endure such a mess for a bargain, they would be even more dedicated when the shopping experience improved. This relentless focus on customer value and experience laid the foundation for Walmart's success. ONE OF THE things I love about entrepreneurship and “small business” is the speed at which you can bring products to market. I remember watching a Harvard Business School interview that featured Nelson Peltz and he was discussing his acquisition of Snapple from Quaker Oats. He talked about how at the time the alternative beverage category was fast moving, and that it didn’t lend itself to consumer marketing studies etc…So if they liked a new flavor they would ship out 10k, if it didn’t sell they wouldn’t ship it again, and if it did, they would make 20k. But they didn’t waste a lot of time on studies and focus groups. The Snapple deal went on to become one of his most profitable transactions and a business school case study. With business moving even faster today, and the retail environment as competitive as it has ever been, we’re not going to sacrifice quality for speed, but when we feel comfortable with a new item you better believe it’s coming to market.
