Striking a balance between modernity and tradition is a constant challenge for many communities, particularly those nestled in the majestic mountains of Gilgit Baltistan. The Hunza Valley, renowned for its harmonious way of life, exemplifies this. While modernity offers undeniable progress, it can also lead to a materialistic outlook that disrupts the sacred balance that defines these regions. To navigate this change, we must explore avenues that embrace advancements in healthcare, education, tourism, and technology, while simultaneously safeguarding the time-tested values, cultural practices, harmony and deep respect for nature that underpin the soul of the mountains. 🌿 Just back from an unforgettable Faro, Portugal adventure! 🇵🇹 🌬️ We arrived to a red weather warning and news of disarray, but the fierce wind had mostly settled by morning. 💨 Our city tour felt like an obstacle course – closures, broken glass, deep puddles, and snapped trees showed the storm's might. 🪶 Yet, in the old town's heart, we found four stork nests, seemingly precarious, yet unscathed by the tempest. Whist many trees, roads and walls had been eradicated these nests remained untouched! 🐣 These storks are year-round Faro residents, strengthening their nests after each flight. Our guide shared that with every flyover of the nature reserve they pick up a branch to reinforce their ever growing nests! 🌍 It's a stellar example of the #circulareconomy nature masters, no waste, only flow. Nature's engineering protected storks and built resilience. With each gust of wind comes more branches! 💪 As we build a sustainable human experience, let's remember nature's age-old wisdom. Mother Nature excels at resilience, whilst it’s new to us, we just need to follow her lead. 🐣 Storks, and all life (except most humans), inspire resilience. We're still learning, like nature's babies, doing what we can to understand the world, finding our feet and pooping our pants. 😆 Growing up for us is all about (re)finding our place in the living world's resilient flow & redefining how and why we will do it. 🌄 Wilderness refers to those parts of nature that have not been altered by humans and over which human influence is low. Wilderness includes wildlife, the unaltered abiotic environment, as well as a wilderness quality. The latter is best illustrated by that feeling you get when traveling alone in nature, that you are far removed from any trace of human presence; that it is just you and nature. 📝For more than 𝟏𝟐 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, we have been involved in 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐦𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. [Project] Diomede Archipelago | The Bering Strait The Bering Strait project stands as a foundational piece for TALLER, marking our first international competition win. This project laid the groundwork for many of our current endeavors. Our commitment to understanding and engaging with both landscape and territory remains a core principle, and we continue to apply these ideas in new and dynamic ways. Rather than attempting to do a landscape design, instead we devised a landscape strategy aimed at bridging two distinct political, temporal, and cultural divides. We approached this global-scale project with a detailed understanding of the microscopic. Our belief in the power of connection drives us to create projects that bridge territories, fostering a more connected and self-aware world. For this project, we envisioned a vast and evolving landscape that not only respected the delicate ecosystems of the Bering Strait but also promoted sustainable tourism. Waterford has recently marked the successful conclusion of the Fáilte Ireland Destination Towns initiative, a groundbreaking project that has significantly enriched the visitor experience within the city. The project, generously supported by a €500,000 investment from Fáilte Ireland , has achieved its objectives, breathing new life into #Waterford City's cultural and historical treasures. The initiative was celebrated in the presence of esteemed guests, including Mary Houlihan, Manager for Ireland's Ancient East at Fáilte Ireland, alongside local councillors, and representatives from the business community. The project's core goals were clearly defined at its inception: 1️⃣Reinforcing the Viking Story: Waterford City embarked on a mission to deepen the understanding of its Viking #heritage. This was achieved by demarcating the Viking Triangle's boundaries and introducing cutting-edge digital orientation tools. 2️⃣Wayfinding Improvements: A comprehensive wayfinding scheme was developed, ensuring that visitors can effortlessly navigate the city. This included innovative content generation techniques. 3️⃣Mapping Enhancements: The project unveiled a new city map, highlighting various city zones and emphasizing Waterford's walkability. 4️⃣Car Park Reidentification: Signage and banners, denoting the city's #attractions, were strategically placed at car parks to provide a warm welcome and promote the city's charms. The session aims to understand how leisure and tourism-based conservation initiatives and public engagement programmes can sustain dark-sky spaces and places. We welcome creative and novel papers.
