How to improve light sources for biomedical and healthcare applications : the challenge that the HILIGHT project has to overcome ! HILIGHT means ‘Highly Integrated Versatile Laser Source enabling two-photon excitation in digital diagnostics and biomedical research’. This project started at the end of 2023, proposes a miniaturised and versatile optical pulse burst source together with innovative sensing technology. This will permit to overcome limitations in SoA instrumentation that often confine the use of two-photon microscopy and time-resolved detection to the specialist laboratory. Two key applications are particularly targeted : instantaneous digital histopathology and cancer research and diagnostics. Light is our ally in the fight against cancer. #16May The International Day of Light is celebrated on 16 May each year, the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. This day is a call to strengthen scientific cooperation and harness its potential to foster peace and sustainable development. The study of light has led to promising alternative energy sources, lifesaving medical advances in diagnostics technology and treatments, light-speed internet and many other discoveries that have revolutionized society and shaped our understanding of the universe. These technologies were developed through centuries of fundamental research on the properties of light – starting with Ibn Al-Haytham’s seminal work, Kitab al-Manazir (Book of Optics), published in 1015 and including Einstein’s work at the beginning of the 20th century, which changed the way we think about time and light. At the #LINAC2024 Conference (August 25-28) Carlo Rossi, Principal Accelerator Physicist at CERN, and Activity Coordinator for DEFT (Deep Electron FLASH Therapy) gave a presentation on "The Deep Electron Flash Therapy Facility". The presentation focused on the design of a novel VHEE linac capable of producing electron beams that deliver radiation at dose rates and time scales consistent with the FLASH effect. The paper featured contributions from teams at CERN and CHUV | Lausanne university hospital), as well as THERYQ. In 2022, Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), CERN and THERYQ signed a three-party agreement on the development of a world first FLASH #radiotherapy device using Very High Energy Electron (VHEE) radiation to treat #cancers resistant to conventional treatments. The machine, based on CERN #technology, will be assembled and installed at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), where a special bunker is already under construction. This project was initially supported by Fondation ISREC through a CHF 25.8 million donation from the Biltema Foundation. The vision of the DEFT project is to transfer CERN's knowledge in accelerator design to address the clinical requirements of treatment centres like Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV). Following the device's first installation, THERYQ's focus will be on translating this technology into an industrialised device suitable for deployment in clinical settings globally. The association of the DEFT project and innovative electron FLASH-RT technology pioneered by THERYQ has the potential to revolutionise cancer treatment by enabling the precise irradiation of all solid tumours throughout the body in just a fraction of a second. With civil engineering works on the bunker in Lausanne expected to be completed by the end of next summer, the device's assembly and installation is set to begin from late 2025.
