Family caregivers are so important for people living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Learn more about books recommended to caregivers that can support them from Linus Health Chief Strategy Officer John Showalter.
Being a caregiver increases an individual’s risk of developing dementia themselves; some studies indicate it may make the risk more than five times higher. It is important that caregivers also take time to support their own emotional and physical health. @New York Times asked healthcare providers and experts to share their book recommendations to help those caring for others. While resources like books can't solve everything, they can offer validation, advice, and support to caregivers. Here are three titles that I recommend to those caring for others, which are based on self care for the caregiver: ▶ Book 1: “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. This book provides guidance and helps motivate people to make small but meaningful changes every day, which is essential when caregiving may present challenges to making big changes. ▶ Book 2: ”You are Only Just Beginning” by Morgan Harper Nichols. It is a collection of poems and essays about embracing your next adventure with grace. It is a way for caregivers to get a little time for reflection and respite to support their mental health. ▶ Book 3: “The Road Back to You” by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stable. This book is designed to help you understand your own motivations through the use of the Enneagram personality test. It encourages all caregivers to learn more about themselves to better cope with the extremely difficult challenge they are facing.
