If we start eating more plant-based foods, how will this affect the UK's farmers and growers? Quite rightly, this is one of the most common questions that I get asked. One crucial part of the answer is that people working the land can - and must - benefit from a transition towards plant-based meat and dairy. At the Good Food Institute Europe, we're continuing our work to explore this question. It's why we commissioned the fantastic Green Alliance team to analyse how alternative proteins might release land to make more space for agroecology and nature restoration. (You can read their report here: https://lnkd.in/edPpyFp2) We've also been speaking with businesses to understand how some farmers are already finding new opportunities afforded by plant-based foods - as well as the barriers that hold them back. One roadblock we often hear about is crop processing infrastructure - the tools needed to turn crops into ingredients for plant-based meat. Frustratingly, the UK has a real lack of these facilities, which is limiting the ability for farmers and growers to seize new business opportunities. In my view, that's something the state is well-placed to address. Read more in a new piece for GFI Europe's website 👇 https://lnkd.in/e357aXk9

"Reducing food loss and waste at both the production and post-harvest stages is crucial to tackle food insecurity, particularly in developing countries. Through its global breeding programs, guided by Accelerated Breeding, CGIAR is addressing both abiotic and biotic stresses while enhancing the shelf life of staple crops like cassava. By targeting these key challenges, CGIAR’s efforts are combating food loss and waste, fostering more sustainable food systems, benefiting farmers, consumers, and the environment. Among the points that stood out in this opinion piece in @The Edge Malaysia is the need to "continually train farmers, not just in optimising their crop yields, but also how to grow alternative crops between seasons". This was also one of the many insights that we got when we held our first rounds of focus groups with farmers - they want some guidance and support in knowing what they should farm, when they should plant certain crops, and how should they sell their harvested crops. It was with these insights that we created the #FarmByteApp and have it serve as a knowledge hub for farmers. By doing so, we are not only helping farmers optimise their farming practices to grow high-value and high-quality crops, but we are also strengthening the ecosystem from the upstream to ensure food security for all. To date, we have close to 500 farmers onboarded on our app, and if you are interested in finding out more about it, reach out to us! Closing gaps that separate U.S. Soy farmers and their global customers is central to U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC)’s mission. One way we tackle this need is by studying the industries where #soybean products are sold: Food, feed and fuel. Whether it’s being part of the conversation, bolstering local and regional enterprises, or training the next generation of #agriculture leaders through programs like our Soy Excellence Centers, there are so many ways we seek to bridge the divide. Agriculture Dive writes about how the food industry’s #sustainability efforts represent both challenges and opportunities for farmers seeking to get their products to market and food and beverage companies in need of reliably sourced goods. https://lnkd.in/eN2bdzx2

Worth Reading: 🌽 Global #agriculture has become increasingly focused on a few highly productive commodity #crops suited to industrial #farming systems and grown at scale in the ‘#breadbasket’ areas of the #world . These staples have crowded out alternative, traditionally grown varieties and attracted the lion's share of crop-related R&D. Over 50% of the world's crop calories now come from #wheat , #rice and #maize ; adding sugar, barley, soy, #palm and potato gets to 76%. 🌽 Together, the system that specializes in producing cheaper, more available, calories, has led to significant costs levied on #health systems from inadequate diets, and on the #environment via production, manufacturing, processing and #wastemanagement . There is now growing evidence, as suggested, that the costs from dietary-related ill health and environmental degradation exceed the economic value of agriculture, raising the alarming prospect that the full costs to society of #food production may outweigh the benefits. 👩🌾 A challenge for #globaldevelopment is that endeavouring to ‘#feed a world of 7–10 billion’ in the way we are currently fed will create more problems than it solves through driving the vicious circle.
