The world's greatest advertisement - Tonight over 150 million people across the globe will tune into watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. Advertisers will pay $7million dollars for a 30 second slot and Apple have paid $50million to sponsor the half time show which will feature Usher. And how much will her get? Not a single penny. In fact Usher may well spend millions on tonight's performance. The Weeknd spent $7million on his half-time show and Dr Dre something similar in 2022. It's a long list of superstars that don't get paid a penny; Justin Timberlake, Prince, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, the Rolling Stones, Rihanna. So why do they do it? Exposure. Last year more people watched Rihanna's half-time show (118 million) than the game itself (115 million). Searches for her beauty brand Fenty went up by over 830%, she gained 3 million Instagram followers and became the most streamed artist globally. Usher released his album 2 days before the Super Bowl and he will expect his performance tonight to help him to the top of the Billboard Charts. I heard there was an (American) football game last night at the Usher Bowl? 🎤 Was I the only one who woke up this morning and immediately switched on YouTube for the halftime show? It got me thinking, why would world-famous artists who are used to earning six or seven figures per show agree to perform for free? That's right, Usher did not receive a single cent from the NFL. The magic word - exposure! The artists that perform the halftime show are essentially getting to showcase their music to more than 100 million people in the US alone, without having to pay any of the costs including travel and production. And that can be pricey. For Usher, it's a strategic move to drum up excitement for his imminent world tour and upcoming album. In today's digital world, streaming generates almost 90% of music industry earnings and a Super Bowl spotlight acts as a significant boost to revenue. Take 2022, for instance. Icons Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem united on stage, resulting in a mega spike in their music sales with Snoop and Mary J's streams skyrocketing by 143% and 132% alone. New Post: Universal Music’s Pandora Policy Change Is a Matter of $135M in Annual Artist Royalties - https://lnkd.in/greJHvy9 - A year ago, Matt Najdowski, like many business managers for top artists, was routinely going over royalty statements when he discovered an unusual plunge in revenue. For years, Pandora, the internet-radio streaming service, had paid 50% of song royalties to the artists through a collection agency called SoundExchange. But suddenly, artists signed to Universal Music Group were receiving a much lower percentage, similar to what they received from on-demand streaming services like Spotify or YouTube. And the payments were now arriving directly from UMG instead. Najdowski researched further and learned UMG was able to change the way it reported Pandora revenue because Pandora itself had changed. In 2016, the streaming service began evolving from webcasting to a Spotify-style “search and play what you want” model. Because Pandora now offers an interactive service, rather than a non-interactive webcaster, it needed to make new deals with labels rather than relying on a government-mandated compulsory license at a standardized rate. As such, UMG and other labels were able to change the flow of royalties so they collected and paid them directly — rather than SoundExchange distributing to artists, as law mandates under these compulsory licenses. With UMG’s change in policy last year it became the first and only label so far, according to sources, to take advantage of this change. With that, the royalty splits for artists changed, too, from a 50% split through SoundExchange to whatever, often smaller, percentage their record deals dictated for on-demand streaming revenues. That’s significant as the world’s biggest record label contributed $135 million to SoundExchange as part of its Pandora share for artists, according to Billboard estimates based on financial reports and other public information. “That specific royalty stream can range from a couple hundred dollars per month to a couple thousand. It can be a significant amount of money,” says Najdowski, royalty manager for Farris, Self & Moore. This change in accounting, he adds, “is more or less taking money out of pockets.” Perhaps most notably, Najdowski discovered that the many UMG artists who are unrecouped – meaning they have yet to earn back the money the label spent on recording, marketing and other costs – were receiving a worrisome amount: zero. These acts were previously being paid directly by SoundExchange, so their unrecouped status with UMG was not an issue for these royalties. “A lot is being withheld, and it feels like a grab for money from the labels,” says Heather Gruber, royalty manager for Fineman West, a business-management firm that represents artists. New Post: Universal Music Group and DGMC Want to Build a ‘Music City’ in the UAE - https://lnkd.in/g9VUxdr6 - Universal Music Group is poised to open its first Capitol Studios outside of Hollywood, plus live performance spaces, music education academies and a new record label, as part of a collaboration with DGMC in the burgeoning music hub of the United Arab Emirates. UMG and DGMC, a UAE-based music organization, will work together to build what’s described as a “Music City” that will serve as a regional hub for both local and global recording artists and songwriters in the fast-growing Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The planned studios will include all the latest accoutrement, including a Dolby Atmos mixing room, state-of-the-art recording equipment and rehearsal rooms for artists and writers. The label will be a joint venture between the two companies and will work to turn local artists into global stars. “At its heart, the UMG-DGMC partnership’s aim is to support and nurture talented artists and songwriters in the region and help them reach their full creative and commercial potential,” the companies said in a joint announcement on Monday (Feb. 12). The tie-up follows on the heels of UMG’s acquisition of UAE-based music company Chabaka late last summer to become part of Virgin Music Group. An increasingly attractive region for music mergers and acquisitions, MENA had the highest growth rate of any global region in 2021 and the third-fastest growth — 23.8% — in 2022, according to the IFPI. “We have long recognized the potential in the Middle East, and are incredibly proud to be working with world-class partners like DGMC,” said Adam Granite, executive vp of market development for UMG. “We share their excitement and vision to harness this potential and nurture the next generation of recording artists and songwriters. New Post: Every EGOT Winner & What They Won For - https://lnkd.in/g_x3-RZd - When Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won a Primetime Emmy on night 2 of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday (Sept. 8, 2024), they became EGOTs, having won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competition. They won their Emmy for outstanding music and lyrics for a song they co-wrote for Only Murders in the Building. They co-wrote the song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” with another songwriting team, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Only 21 people have achieved EGOT status, which has become the ultimate mic-drop move in show business. If the original idea of becoming an EGOT meant going to the very top in four distinct fields of entertainment, shortcuts have materialized to getting there, which has made the achievement more commonplace and less worthy of awe. The Tonys award producer credits far too liberally. Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson won their Tony Awards for being among a platoon of producers of a winning Broadway show. Hudson was one of more than 40 producers on A Strange Loop. Her participation was announced the day before the show began previews in April 2022. It won the Tony two months later. And not all EGOT awards are equally easy or hard to get. There are currently just 23 categories at the Oscars and 26 at the Tony Awards. Far more awards are handed out at the Grammys (94 categories this year) and the Primetime Emmys (a whopping 123 categories this year, spread out over three nights). And that doesn’t even count the various other Emmy shows, such as the Daytime Emmys and the Children’s and Family Emmys. We mentioned earlier that the definition of EGOT is having won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competition. There’s some debate about that. Six more individuals — Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, James Earl Jones, Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones and director/producer Frank Marshall — qualify if you count honorary or special awards. However, most EGOT experts don’t count non-competitive awards. The whole point is to have won the awards in competition.
