Personal post alert... and it is a bit hard hitting ❓ Did you know that the average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is 46 for men and 42 for women... ❔ Homeless people are over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population. ❓ People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence. More than one in three people sleeping rough have been deliberately hit or kicked or experienced some other form of violence whilst homeless. People have even been set on FIRE. ❔ The statistics show that one third of care leavers become homeless in the first two years immediately after they leave care and 25% of homeless people have been in care at some point in their lives. I am not only a care leaver, but have personally been homeless and at risk of homelessness many times in my younger years – so raising money for this great cause is also somewhat personal. All donations are so very much appreciated, and I am looking forward to seeing just how much I (we) can raise this year! 🙏

One of the best things about working for Totem Consulting (and there are many!) is being connected to The Totem Foundation. Each time we deliver an internal knowledge sharing session to the team, The Foundation donates a fee to the charity of our choosing. For my session on Positive Psychology this month I chose Gingerbread (www.gingerbread.org.uk). Gingerbread has been helping to support single parents and influence policy since 1918. Here are some stats about single parents in the U.K. I didn’t know before: ❗ Almost a quarter of families with dependent children in the UK are single parent families.  🚺 90% of single parents are women  📌 28% have a disability (compared to 14% of couple parents) 🛑 21% are from a Black or minority ethnic background (compared to 16% nationally)  ➡ The average age of a single parent is 39 I have such respect for anyone who finds themselves as a single parent, for whatever reason. I’m pleased to have been able to play a small part in supporting this important group in our society by nominating Gingerbread. #singleparents #giving #positivepsychology #charity

This is Jacqui, the Support Services Coordinator at Girikon's Client Organisation: Council of Single Mothers and Their Children (CSMC). Jacqui and her team provide single mothers with the specialist support and information that CSMC is known for. Now Jacqui is speaking out and asking for your help. CSMC's Support Line Workers say they have never had as much unmet demand as now, and the need has never been more acute. The need for support and information has always been high, but demand has skyrocketed due to the cost-of-living crisis. Single mothers who call CSMC's Support Line need help now, but the sheer volume of calls means that many are having to leave messages and wait for a callback. I’ll be in silence, limiting communication to work-related emails. My focus will be on creating content and training. During this time, I won’t engage in conversations with FBS staff, clients, family, or anyone else. Why? To empathise with the experience of adults in domestic abuse situations—having a voice but being unable to use it. Two days is a mere fraction of what they endure daily. Previous challenges showed Day 1 as tolerable, but Day 2 brought feelings of isolation and frustration, where I almost vanished from others’ awareness. I’m fundraising to sustain support for families in similar situations, offering crucial therapy for those deeply affected. Join me in making a meaningful change.
