17 years ago, when I started, the term "impact investing" did not exist and the Sustainable Development Goals had not yet been launched. Our trust-based and engaged approach to philanthropy that centers around the needs of local communities sits at the heart of our work. We are deeply grateful and honored to have been supporting our incredible local partners that have improved the quality of lives of millions of people facing disadvantages as well as protecting critical ecosystems. This impact would not have been possible without the support and close collaboration with key partners, funders, and thought leaders. Thank you. I had the incredible opportunity to serve as the Captain for the fundraising campaign challenge at the #BCMBAGames, where we aligned our efforts with the theme of decolonizing business. It was a transformative experience that allowed us to weave together our Indigenous values, lived experiences, and knowledge. Decolonizing business goes beyond just acknowledging the historical injustices faced by Indigenous communities. It requires us to actively dismantle the systems, policies, and processes that perpetuate inequality and marginalization. Our campaign challenge was a platform for us to showcase how we can create meaningful change by challenging the status quo. One of the key aspects of our approach was sustainability. We recognized that true decolonization requires us to think beyond short-term solutions and consider the long-term impact of our actions. How can we foster lasting social change that not only benefits the present generation but also serves as inspiration for the next seven generations? This forward-thinking mindset was at the core of our campaign strategy. Our campaign was a success, not only in terms of the funds raised but also in the conversations it sparked and the connections it forged. It was a testament to the power of collaboration and the potential for business to be a force for positive change. I am incredibly proud of our team and the impact we were able to make through the campaign challenge. It was a reminder that decolonizing business is not just a theoretical concept, but a tangible reality that we can actively work towards. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this journey and look forward to continuing to contribute to the decolonization of business. 🌳Our individual and collective take on 'how philanthropy can fund narrative work at scale' was diverse, deep and rooted in making powerful systems of stories visible, and understood and then seeking to transform them. What an awesome panel to be part of, with Mandy Van Deven Chiara K. Cattaneo, Abi Knipe and hosted by the brilliant Virginia Ruan. 🙌We looked at this question from different angles: From what it means to support narrative interventions in practice, to how we begin to build narrative infrastructure across issues and movements; how to question and transform the deeply held stories and beliefs which emerge in how we act on migration, climate, human rights; to examine the power and stories enacted by Philanthropy itself. 🕸I think of narratives as a form of power, like a web of stories, holding ideas about what is acceptable and possible in place. If we take this lens, then one 'new' narrative, one campaign, one organization, one funder, alone will not transform that system on its own. ✨This requires intervening in the existing web-system of stories and creating spaces for radical imagination to dream up alternative stories of the systems we want to be part of and see in the world. Who gets to dream these new visions is critically important. 🌟 Just attended an insightful conference on "Philanthropy in the 21st Century" as part of the Action Week at EGADE. It was a privilege to hear from Melissa Berman and engage in a panel discussion featuring Lorena Guillé-Laris, Magdalena Aninat Sahli, @Rodrigo Villar, moderated by Luciana Manfredi. Here are my 5 key takeaways from the experience: 1. Embrace Collaborative Philanthropy: Collaboration among organizations of all sizes and sectors is crucial for addressing root causes of social issues effectively and sharing knowledge. 2. Shift from Control to Collaboration: Advocating for systemic reforms in philanthropy is essential, fostering transparency and accountability, in order to build trust. 3. Invest in Data and Talent: Prioritizing investment in data analysis and talent development enhances the sector's capacity for long-term impact and innovation. 4.Promote Cross-Sector Partnerships: Encouraging cross-sector partnerships and innovative giving/investment models is vital for comprehensive solutions to complex social challenges. 5. Embrace Risk and Learn from Failure: Cultivating a culture of risk-taking and learning from failures promotes systemic change and sustainable solutions over the long term. Honored to pen this recent op-ed in the The Chronicle of Philanthropy! "By inserting the climate crisis into popular culture, beloved and critically acclaimed movies like these have the power to influence public perceptions and ultimately policy decisions. But to make a real difference, more climate narratives need to appear on the world’s screens — and more donors need to recognize the value of working with Hollywood to change hearts and minds on a range of issues. Copious research shows that the stories we watch on screens change people’s behaviors and worldviews, helping for example, to reduce prejudice toward LGBTQ+ people and creating new social norms such as designated drivers. Yes, you read that right: Hollywood played a pivotal role in reducing alcohol-related driving fatalities by 30 percent in just six years. Our goal is to see 50 percent of eligible TV and film stories acknowledge the climate crisis by 2027 — an effort that is currently supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Walton Family Foundation, and the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), among others. Meeting that goal means countering more than a century of well-funded narrative-change efforts in Hollywood by the fossil fuel industry, which grasped the importance of story long ago. Taking on these corporate giants and telling a different story will require a dedicated response from philanthropy."
