I've been able to share "why" I created Hope Always Foundation a lot lately and it's been a little difficult and a lot more cathartic than I dreamed of. If you have some time, please read my "why".
It’s about time we shared more about our reason for being and the inspiration behind Hope Always Foundation and our mission. A huge thank you to Bobby Kesselman for sharing his deeply personal story. We love you, Becca! https://lnkd.in/gHF97cFM To donate: https://lnkd.in/g9hHWrXu

I find it difficult to put into words the remarkable things that are accomplished by the amazing people at Matheny - the residents, students, clinicians, and staff. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this video is worth 100,000 words. I am proud to serve on the Board of this remarkable organization. Check out this "Matheny Magic." https://lnkd.in/e53ahCYx

The 2024 Signature Report from Casey Family Programs champions the value of a kin-first culture, describes how various communities are implementing this approach, and provides resources to help other communities begin to cultivate a kin-first culture. Throughout the report, you can find what science tells us about the importance of connection, why a kin-first culture leads to better outcomes for children and families, and how communities around the country are embracing this powerful approach to help children grow up where they belong. In addition, you'll find resources, including ones from our Network cited throughout the report. We appreciate Casey Family Programs for including our resources and hope you find them helpful. https://lnkd.in/gJYTcXw #KinshipCare #Grandfamilies #KinFirst

August is National Civic Health Month. The National Civic League has created a civic health index that includes seven components of community-based civic capital: engaged residents, inclusive community leadership, collaborative institutions, embracing diversity and equity, authentic communication, a culture of engagement, and shared vision and values. Here in Arkansas, it is in our best interests, and in the best interests of our children and grandchildren, that we elect leaders who make it their mission to create and sustain civic health infrastructure that empowers the citizens of Arkansas to build livable communities where we all can thrive together. Read the 2023 Arkansas Civic Health Index, that I co-authored, to find out what our elected officials should be thinking about to improve our state's civic health: https://lnkd.in/gqaPARWU

I'm excited to share my guest column, "To restore humanity in America, we must restore it in ourselves," published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Get Schooled blog. In the wake of the tragic Apalachee school shooting, I reflect on how individual responsibility and compassion are more critical than ever in fostering a more humane society. This piece explores the role we each play in addressing societal issues through our daily actions and choices, with a focus on creating safer, more compassionate communities for everyone. I really appreciated this! Watch here: https://lnkd.in/eahTQs2S Key Insights: 🔍 Racial Awareness: Many white individuals are becoming aware of systemic racism, but ongoing education is essential for lasting change. This awareness can lead to more empathetic interactions and systemic improvements. 🏳️ Cultural Sensitivity in Therapy: Mental health professionals must differentiate between race, racism, and culture to treat clients effectively, recognizing that trauma is often collective and intergenerational. 📖 The Role of Literature: Dr. Helms’ work provides crucial frameworks for understanding racial identity, promoting self-reflection among white individuals to foster better interpersonal dynamics. 💡 Collective Trauma: Exposure to racism is a shared trauma among people of color, and therapy must address these nuanced experiences rather than dismiss them as isolated incidents. 🌐 Re-socialization for Equality: A shift from a male-dominated perspective to a more humane approach is necessary for fostering equality and sharing resources among diverse populations. 💼 Economic Insecurity and Racial Polarization: Recognizing that economic disparities affect all races can unite individuals in addressing broader systemic issues, moving beyond race-based divisions. 🔄 Coalition Building: Fostering alliances based on shared struggles, rather than solely racial identity, can create a more inclusive movement towards social justice and equity.

If you are connected to Landis Communities, you likely know the guiding values shared across the organization – Joy, Compassion, Integrity, Stewardship, and Community. Although not a guiding value, Fellowship, the theme for this issue of FLOURISH, is the fundamental element connecting them all. We experience fellowship as we live and work together in community, build relationships, learn each other’s life stories and serve one another in Christ-like love. In this issue, you will find stories of where fellowship can occur – gathered around a quilt, over a bowl of strawberries and ice cream, in a drum circle, or in the company of a caregiver.
