South Carolina’s Second Chance initiative not only helps create a pathway to employment for returning citizens, it provides employers with a larger pool of skilled workers, as well as hiring incentives, making for a more robust workforce. Graniteville Specialty Fabrics is just one of our many Second Chance success stories. In 2019, the company utilized the Work Opportunity Tax Credit to hire a formerly incarcerated individual, who has since become a valuable member of the team, receiving multiple raises of the last five years of employment. Carlie Casterline is the Acting Manager at our Newton Home. She joined the team in June of 2020🌟 What is the best advice you’d give someone just starting as a DSP at SCARC? Keep an open mind! Just because one house or day program doesn’t work out doesn’t mean that none will! Try to help out at various programs and always remember the reason why you got into this field. How have you grown professionally while on SCARC’s Team? SCARC has opened so many opportunities in my short time here. I was fortunate enough to move up to an assistant manager within the first eight months of working for SCARC and it feels as if the rest just paved the way itself. I have learned how to work with coworkers of all ages, be a supervisor for someone who is significantly older than me, communicate in a professional manner, and most importantly I learned that it is okay to ask for help! What’s the best part of your job? The best part of my job is the individuals I serve and the staff that have become a huge part of my life. Being able to advocate for those I serve and seeing them grow is so extremely rewarding. Which of SCARC’s values resonate with you the most and why? Integrating our individuals into the community for sure! I love going out with our residents as a group and taking them on one on one outings. I love seeing the smiles on their faces when we go out and showing the community how great our individuals are. What is one thing you wish people knew about SCARC? I wish that people knew how much fun everyone at SCARC is. I wish people knew that this job is not just sitting in a house or program, but rather engaging with our individuals and spending time with them in the community. What is your favorite quote? “Work hard in silence, let success be your noise.” -Frank Ocean What do you do for fun outside of work? I am a volunteer EMT for Newton EMS as well as a nursing student. Most of my time is spent in the back of an ambulance or in a hospital, but when I do get a free moment outside of that I love riding my quad and being with my dog.

Here's a Friday real-life fairy tale that's unfortunately all too typical. A married couple hire a contractor to undertake a major renovation in Riverdale with minimal documentation, no designer engaged to review work and completion on site and a threadbare contract furnished by the contractor (which fails to detail specified standards, scope, completion schedule or cost other than a non-binding "budget"). Predictably, events go pear-shaped as contractor 1 is grossly overpaid, disappears and the shoddy work (including undermining of the neighbour's property) left in bleak testimony. The pattern repeats itself with contractor 2: overpaid and gone with significant work left incomplete and Tyvek flapping in the breeze. Interestingly, the clients are BOTH lawyers who should know better - and frankly, they're wealthy enough that this situation will eventually sort itself out with (even) more money. I draw from this real example and countless others that the main challenge of single family housing work is that the scale seems too small to do things correctly. It's such a familiar story. The only thing more expensive than hiring professionals is not hiring professionals.

What brought you to this company? Triad was a sub-contractor on the job I was on in Hackberry, LA with McDermott. I helped run the material department and ordered all of Triads materials, so I was able to establish a relationship with them. I loved how personal the company was and how they went above and beyond for their employees. 2.) What's the best thing about your job? Traveling and meeting new people! 3.) Who or what motivates you? Family 4.) What's the best advice you've ever received? Make your dreams a priority because you only live once. 5.) What's your favorite quote? Teamwork makes the dream work. 6.) What's your favorite sports team? WHO DAT- GO SAINTS 7.) What's your favorite tv show? I love murder mysteries. 8.) What's one item you can't live without? Amazon 9.) Does anyone see what’s wrong with this picture? These are the types of frustrations that I’m running into in New York State as I try to pursue the pathway to become a certified school counselor. Click on a workshop link and it brings you to a dropbox with a 2016 document in it. Hours and hours of circles on many NYS websites. With the terrible user experience I’d expect lower property taxes.
