A few years ago, I embarked on a journey of self-exploration while working for an employer I truly enjoyed. I felt the need to expand my knowledge and challenge myself continuously. Motivational speakers often say, “you have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable,” and I embraced this mindset for personal and professional growth. Joining Babynov USA brought the typical “startup” challenges, which I welcomed with enthusiasm. My time there was filled with invaluable lessons: what to do, how to do it, and just as crucially, what not to do and how not to be. Life has a way of throwing curveballs. Recently, my son was diagnosed with a dual disorder, which requires my full attention. This unexpected turn led to the difficult decision to end my tenure at Babynov. While it’s bittersweet, it’s also an opportunity for a new beginning. Now, I'm excited to pivot and explore new opportunities in Sales, Business Development, Procurement, and Purchasing. We don't have middle mangers at The Lab | Road Trip, and our C-Level is just two people. Our sales team is three. Our admin team is one. Our HR team is one. Everyone else is trying to set production records, all day, everyday. 47 people making prerolls. 3 people making sales. 4 people doing the rest. We don't have a marketing department. We don't have facility, shift, or general managers. We have strong SOPS. We have fair compensation. We have a team of hustlers. We have centralized our goals and decentralized decision making. We have a culture of pride and individual ownership. Yes, this is an experiment. No, I'm not 100% sure where it will go. Nevertheless, I am convinced that the right people, compensated fairly, can and will achieve goals and set records again and again if: A) company goals are public and their progress is tracked publicly, and B) determining the manner in which the goals are achieved is a shared endeavor amongst all staff.

Before diving into hiring, ask yourself: What does my company need? What are the essential skills and qualities for this position? About hiring We recently filled another vacancy, which I already wrote about. Walking this path made me think about team chemistry, compatibility, and effectiveness for the first time. The fact is that I really love basketball and watch the NBA regularly. Very often the topic of a manager’s work and building an effective team is touched upon. In short, having Stars does not guarantee victory in the championship. Often, on the contrary, the Stars cannot get along together and the results are lame. It is important to build a working system, set up chemistry and culture. Make sure that the new player organically complements the existing squad. It’s still difficult for me to break this down into specific variables, but what can be said for sure is the importance of the balance of psychotypes in the team-manager-customer triangle and the balance of hard skills. In acquisitions, for example, UAM from Fintech, real estate or Edtech are very different schools. And mixing them is useful! What do you think?

No mistake that cannot be fixed. So if it doesn’t work put me somewhere else or fire me. But I do NOT fail” - So, I became the founding member of Sales Expansion (now known as Global Workforce Consultants) - The team is now global with 200ppl+ - My team has never missed quota (despite ever growing goals from my partner in RevOps Austin Cook Kiessig 😉) - We now sell 10+ products - Amount I have learned cannot be measured - My leadership pushes me and empowers me regularly Chris Lee Shuo Wang - Ever grateful for my friend and mentor Greg Lazarus for helping me get here! 🚨 PROMOTION ALERT 🚨 Let me tell you about this ambitious young man, Jeison Hernandez. Back in December, Jeison walks into one of my stores with a résumé in hand, and says he’s looking for work. I interviewed him, and immediately noticed his potential. Jeison joined my team as an entry level sales associate a few days after Christmas, 2023. Since then, not only has he upheld the company and district values consistently, but he took on additional responsibility just to prove himself. He wanted to show me that he can do the job even without a title! Any time I needed someone to help with emergency coverage, he was the first one to step to the plate. Anytime I was unavailable to support another employee, he took the initiative to help out. When his shift ended for the day, and the business was still busy, he stayed off the clock to support his peers. Granted, I still made sure to compensate him for his time! Whenever he was presented with an obstacle, the first thing Jeison thinks about is what he CAN do to fix it, not about what he CAN’T do. All of this, without ask! As a result of his unconditional efforts, he was promoted to a Team Leader (Assistant Manager) in March, 2024. Following a successful February in his store, Jeison ended the first quarter of the year with 106% to his monthly Gross Profit target! Today, he was promoted to Store Manager for his Jackson Heights, Queens store. I love sharing internal growth stories such as this one, because tenure doesn’t necessarily dictate if someone should move up the ladder of hierarchy. But rather their merit, how they uphold the values of the community, extreme ownership, integrity, unconditional efforts and being able to keep their head high when during the HIGHS & the LOWS!
