Hundreds of mammal species are trophy hunted, among them one of the most coveted internationally regulated species is the Black Rhino. Critically Endangered species like Black Rhinos should not be trophy hunted, especially when facing ongoing and increasing threats, such as poaching and habitat loss: trophy hunting harms conservation by exacerbating the population decline of many imperiled species. On this #WorldRhinoDay, let’s celebrate this iconic and ecologically important species. Animals are NOT souvenirs! ❌ Join HSI/Europe in demanding a ban on trophy hunting imports. 👉 hsi.org/notinmyworld #HSIEurope #NotInMyWorld #RhinoDay #ProtectWildlife #StopTrophyHunting #StopTrophyHuntingImports

Hunting matters! This graph illustrates how predator hunting can be vital in practical nature conservation. Intensive fox and raccoon dog control have made a world of difference for the Pied Avocets (and other ground-nesting bird species) in the protected Danish wetland area "Tipperne". It's not rocket science. Predator control is essential to protect vulnerable species in a cultivated landscape.

Born Free has joined with 31 global wildlife organisations to challenge trophy hunting myths, ahead of Europe's largest hunting fair. Trophy hunting supporters claim the killing of often threatened species by trophy hunters somehow supports wildlife conservation, prevents poaching, reduces conflict between people and animals, and is ethically acceptable and sustainable. The truth is that trophy hunting causes immense individual animal suffering and damages populations of endangered and protected species, corruption and mismanagement are widespread, regulation is lacking and revenue does not reach local communities. The same myths used for trophy hunting are used for consumptive extraction in other industries - fashion, furniture, pharmaceuticals etc. From the report: Myth 1: “Trophy hunting supports species conservation”. Fact 1: Trophy hunting negatively impacts populations of endangered and protected species. Myth 4: “Trophy hunting is strictly regulated and sustainable”. Fact 4: Corruption and mismanagement are widespread, regulation and control are lacking. Myth 7: “Trophy Hunting reduces poverty”. Fact 7: Revenue from trophy hunting does not reach local communities. Myth 11: “Trophy hunting is a sustainable use of natural resources”. Fact 11: Greenwashing prevails in the trophy hunting industry. These Myths/Facts from the report on Trophy Hunting also apply to the trade in CITES listed species for other industries: 1. Myth: “Trade in CITES listed species supports species conservation”. The landmark May 2019 IPBES report into the global extinction crisis confirmed that direct exploitation for trade is the most important driver of decline and extinction risk for marine species and the second most important driver for terrestrial and freshwater species: https://lnkd.in/gfk4Nsy9 2. Myth “CITES listed trade is strictly regulated and sustainable”. Most CITES signatory countries use the paper permitting system which is a 50-year-old permitting system that's open to fraudulent use and corruption, the most basic export/import reconciliation can not be done and CITES is incapable of facilitating a modern trade environment: https://lnkd.in/gSdJY6y 3. Myth “Trade in CITES listed species reduces poverty”. The countries making the profits from maintaining the trade in endangered and exotic wild species are in First place: Europe combined, Joint second place: North America and China/Hong Kong combined, Third Place: Japan, Joint fourth place: India and Saudi Arabia. After seafood, fashion and furniture are the biggest users/profiters from the trade in wild species. 4. Myth “CITES trade is a sustainable use of natural resources”. The glossy sustainability reports produced by the luxury companies provided no corresponding supply chain transparency – no verifiable facts. Also 2020 survey of global companies regarding green crime in their supply chains revealed that 65% of respondents know or suspect that third parties they conduct business with may have been involved in a range of illegal, environmentally damaging activities, only 16% of respondents say that they would report a third-party breach externally and 63% of respondents agree that the economic climate is encouraging organisations to take regulatory risks in order to win new business: https://lnkd.in/gCpUr6uH #Biodiversity #Collapse #Regulation

Comment in response to this article by a researcher and conservationist with extensive global experience - Trophy hunting lobby (which are well represented in USA) is not rich and powerful enough to support wildlife/nature conservation, and yet, they are sadly rich enough to employ public-relations officers, pay lobbyists including “conservationists” to re-label their silly activities as “conservation”. The Southern African wildlife industries love it - they also penetrated Tanzania. There are many reasons why India must carefully evaluate it whenever southern African or USA “conservationists” try to penetrate into India. https://lnkd.in/gXhTJEEX
