In recent discussions surrounding hunting, various myths have been perpetuated, often leading to misconceptions about its impact on wildlife conservation, local communities, and ethics. SUCo-SA (Sustainable Use Coalition Southern Africa) aims to shed light on the realities of hunting by debunking these myths with evidence-based truths. #myths #misrepresentation #storytelling #False #legend ________ #truth #SustainableUse #hunting #conservation https://lnkd.in/gsHCjkjx

Hundreds of mammal species are trophy hunted, among them one of the most coveted internationally regulated species is the Black Rhino. Critically Endangered species like Black Rhinos should not be trophy hunted, especially when facing ongoing and increasing threats, such as poaching and habitat loss: trophy hunting harms conservation by exacerbating the population decline of many imperiled species. On this #WorldRhinoDay, let’s celebrate this iconic and ecologically important species. Animals are NOT souvenirs! ❌ Join HSI/Europe in demanding a ban on trophy hunting imports. 👉 hsi.org/notinmyworld #HSIEurope #NotInMyWorld #RhinoDay #ProtectWildlife #StopTrophyHunting #StopTrophyHuntingImports

Hunting matters! This graph illustrates how predator hunting can be vital in practical nature conservation. Intensive fox and raccoon dog control have made a world of difference for the Pied Avocets (and other ground-nesting bird species) in the protected Danish wetland area "Tipperne". It's not rocket science. Predator control is essential to protect vulnerable species in a cultivated landscape.

Comment in response to this article by a researcher and conservationist with extensive global experience - Trophy hunting lobby (which are well represented in USA) is not rich and powerful enough to support wildlife/nature conservation, and yet, they are sadly rich enough to employ public-relations officers, pay lobbyists including “conservationists” to re-label their silly activities as “conservation”. The Southern African wildlife industries love it - they also penetrated Tanzania. There are many reasons why India must carefully evaluate it whenever southern African or USA “conservationists” try to penetrate into India. https://lnkd.in/gXhTJEEX

An overlooked area for deer hunters to hunt is fallow fields or wet areas that are grown-up with tall weeds and bushes that are tall enough to hide deer. Much of these lands were once farm fields that are now Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land that provides 27 million acres of wildlife habitat to be raised as fallow fields instead of being farmed by America’s farmers. The hey-day of CRP acreage was between 1985 to 2014, when there were 37 million acres enrolled in the CRP program. 10 million more acres than we have today. And this habitat benefits not only deer, but upland game birds, songbirds, butterflies, endangered species, and pretty much every other sort of wildlife out there. Who hunts in fallow, CRP land? . . . . . . #bowhunting #bow #archery #archer #whitetaildeer #whitetail #deerhunting #deerseason #deervalley #hunting

Fierce international debates rage over whether trophy #hunting is socially acceptable, especially when people from the Global North hunt well-known animals in sub-Saharan Africa. But how much do we really know about how acceptable or unacceptable members of the public perceive trophy hunting to be? And are some forms of hunting less acceptable or more acceptable than others? A new paper led by WildCRU’s Morally Contested Conservation (MCC) project investigates perceptions of the acceptability of trophy hunting in sub-Saharan #Africa among more than 1200 people who live in urban areas of the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa. Overall, participants perceived hunts to be more acceptable when they would produce tangible benefits for people who live in or near hunting areas in sub-Saharan Africa. The study therefore provides evidence that public perceptions are more pragmatic than is often evident in media coverage and social media exchanges that leave little room for context and nuance. This underscores the importance of recognising that ‘trophy hunting’ is a broad term that covers a wide range of activities involving many different species, motivations, and ecological and economic impacts. Myth 2: Hunters target animals in their prime that make the best trophies Truth 2: Hunting targets surplus or old animals Hunting is often directed at older or surplus animals, ensuring that the overall population remains healthy. This selective approach supports biodiversity and prevents overpopulation, which can lead to habitat degradation and resource scarcity. #misconceptions #conservation #selective #habitat #resources
