According to the KPMG report, the real estate sector is responsible for 40% of global carbon emissions which is responsible for global warming. That’s a big number and as a responsible citizen, I wanted to see how we can make a difference in our sector. So, I researched to explore ways we can incorporate sustainability into our practices at Primarc. 1. Green buildings: This eco-friendly concept aims to minimize the negative impact and maximize the positive impact a building has on its natural environment and human occupants. It reduces CO2 emissions by up to 35%. Currently, metro cities like Delhi NCR and Bengaluru dominate the number of green-certified buildings in India with higher occupancy rates. 2. Urban Farming: People in cities are taking the initiative to play their part in promoting a healthy environment. The government has also introduced the “Smart Urban Farming” project to support urban farmers by providing financial assistance, training, and technical support. 3. Mixed-use development: Today, a residential building also consists of office spaces, which, besides being convenient, help conserve natural resources and encourage walking in urban cities. While all these initiatives are environment-friendly, they need more efficient planning and construction processes. Presently, 56% of real estate companies are assigning high consideration to sustainability in their projects. The real estate industry in India is not only a significant contributor to the nation’s economic growth and job creation but also a catalyst for positive growth. By embracing sustainable practices, we can reduce our carbon footprint, promote eco-friendly living, and pave the way for a greener future. “Our focus on weather has been more on water risk and security and hence we have more granular data on #precipitation, while #heat is not a consistent part of the monitoring process,” says Jaya Dhindaw, Director WRI India Ross Center, in an interview with Venkatesh Kannaiah in the The Indian Express. An urban heat island occurs when a city or parts of a city experience much warmer temperatures than nearby areas. It results from complex interactions between built environments, natural factors, and human activities- ranging from the lack of green cover to dense closely packed homes and the material used in roofing, roads and building construction. While discussing the role of technology in providing data-driven insights into heat stress, Jaya sounds a cautionary note, pointing out that while putting heat monitoring sensors across a city would help in preparedness, it would be fairly resource intensive and difficult to scale – especially for smaller cities that lack capacity and finance. Going beyond nuanced monitoring and tracking of heat using land surface temperature, albedo, humidity, etc, other routes that should be explored, from a mitigation standpoint, includes adopting ‘cool’ roofs/pavements and integrating heat-resilient designs and materials in construction to improve natural ventilation, along with creating vertical gardens and nurturing urban forests.    Signing off, Jaya said, while technology can help monitor and understand the extent of the problem, as well as provide certain interventions to reduce heat island effects, addressing the root causes often requires broader strategies that encompass urban planning, policy development, community engagement, and sustainable development practices.   View the full interview below or read online - https://lnkd.in/eeqk8hbD WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities I World Resources Institute I Madhav Pai I Raj Bhagat Palanichamy I Bina Shetty I Rogier van den Berg

They result from dense infrastructure and limited greenery, necessitating strategies like green infrastructure and sustainable urban design to mitigate effects.

The #realestate industry in India stands at a vital stage as it embraces the imperative of #sustainable development. Today, on #WorldEarthDay, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing green building principles and spearheading the action plan for net-zero carbon buildings. Indian real estate companies are swiftly recognizing the significance of sustainability, with over 300 organizations committing to the Indian Green Building Council's #NetZero Carbon Buildings mission. Initiatives like the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (#GRIHA) and #IGBC certifications are incentivizing sustainable construction, supported by the forthcoming amendments to the Environmental Impact Assessment Notification 2006. Despite challenges such as upfront costs and the need for #upskilling, the route is promising. Notably, the Indian consumer's willingness to pay a premium for sustainable products and services, as revealed by a Nielsen survey, underscores a growing market for #greenbuildings. Moreover, the potential economic impact is substantial, with an #IFC report estimating India's green building market to reach $37.2 billion by 2022. As technological advancements propel progress, collaboration among stakeholders is paramount.
