The UK Government yesterday reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the decarbonisation of aviation through the launch of a new public consultation aimed at implementing the UN’s international scheme CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation). This next step proposal of a global carbon offsetting scheme is to address aviation emission reduction and the impact of flying on the climate, alongside keeping airline costs down. The UN’s aviation agency ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), who developed CORSIA, will oversee airlines offset CO2 emissions on international routes. This encompasses various initiatives such as airlines using renewable energy sources, reforestation projects allowing the purchase of carbon credits, and also how this scheme will be regulated in the UK. The UK Government will work closely with UK ETS Authority on this consultation and the UK’s implementation of CORSIA whilst keeping to the UK emissions trading scheme (ETS). The consultation will suggest measures to ensure airlines are not unfairly laden or constrained. The approach also intends to avoid unnecessary ticket price increases for passengers who rely on air travel. Mike Kane, Aviation Minister, says: “The UK is already at the forefront of global efforts to address climate change and carbon pricing schemes play a vital role in decarbonising aviation.” Nova Pangaea Technologies' unique REFNOVA® process is perfectly positioned to support aviation decarbonisation by producing a high valuable carbon sequestration co-product in biochar, as part of our production. It is a natural carbon removal product that can deliver an immediate decarbonisation impact through sequestration and enable a negative CO₂ emissions profile. This fixed carbon product does not depend on carbon capture storage infrastructure and can be immediately stored to ensure reductions in carbon intensity. It is a means to offsetting CO2 emissions through carbon credits and in support of airline net zero goals. We welcome the UK Government’s ongoing commitment to aviation decarbonisation and continue to work closely with government, aviation and industry to help achieve their ambitions. https://lnkd.in/eqh-D6Bi #Aviationdecarbonisation #UKGOVCORSIA #NPTREFNOVA #NPTBiochar

🌍 A landmark journey has recently unfolded: the first transatlantic flight powered entirely by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from London to New York. Using 50 tonnes of SAF, 88% is sourced from waste fats and 12% from corn production wastes. This flight showcases a significant breakthrough, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70%. Key highlights: 🔹Sustainable impact: The flight used SAF, which substantially reduces emissions, demonstrating a significant stride towards cleaner aviation 🔹Collaborative effort: This success was made possible through the collaboration of industry giants such as Rolls-Royce and bp 🔹Policy alignment: This practical demonstration supports the UK government’s objective of making 10% of aviation fuel sustainable by 2030 This initiative highlights the potential for substantial reductions in the aviation sector's carbon footprint, which accounts for about 2% of global emissions, and sets a benchmark for future sustainable practices in the industry. #SustainableAviation #Avaition #Sustainability #ValuStratNext #GreenEnergy #RenewableEnergy #ZeroEmission #CleanTech

I'm speaking at next week's UKRI Sustainable Aviation Fuel conference on the key role that carbon removals can play in decarbonising aviation alongside SAF. Looking at the progress of CCS and carbon removals in the UK from energy from waste and BECCS plants, I will emphasise the importance of building demand for negative emissions from the aviation sector, to support new projects, drive down costs and reduce the dependency on Government. Aviation will need both SAF and carbon removals at scale to achieve Net Zero. Offsetting carbon removals will be available at scale in the UK as an affordable alternative to SAF by the end of this decade. “The world will always assume something can’t be done, until you do it” - Richard Branson It’s great to read that investor interest in SAF is picking up speed after the Flight100 showcase. But more investment flows are required for SAF to reach the economies of scale! Afterall, Aviation is a notoriously hard-to-abate sector and for the industry to meet the anticapted 65% of the emissions reduction necessary by 2050, SAF investment is critical. 2024: demonstrating an accelerating demand for air travel: ✈️4.7 billion people forecast to travel by the close of 2024. 🛩️ 4 per cent increase from the 4.5 billion people who took to the air in 2019 What does that mean for decarbonisation? ⛽️According to IATA production of SAF is expected to triple to 1.875 billion litres in 2024, represents only 0.53 per cent of the aviation industry’s fuel demand. 🌏 Long road ahead to get to the goal of 5 per cent of fuel consumption to come from eco friendly fuel by 2030. 💡To meet travel demand 17.5billion lt of sustainable fuel will be needed which according to IATA is 9 x more than the projected procurement for 2024. 🚚To become a reality the scalability of SAF production and procurement has to advance quickly. This requires sustainable finance, deep supplychain management and investment across whole SAF value chain from upstream energy production to sustainable feedstock, refineries, blending facilities, and logistics. As the writer highlighted, the good news is SAF can fit in with existing infrastructure making this an ideal match for Aviation Decarbonisation. Considering this and keeping the economies of scope in mind, this makes me think about the possibility of future fuel cross-sectoral aggregation that navigates the transportation sector collectively. The macro-stewardship infrastructure investors could have could be impactful when ensuring a workable supplychain of the nascent fuel alternatives. I took inspiration from the recent IMO paper “ Aggregating demand for zero-emission shipping fuels: pathways for action“. I personally think this is fab, and if the aviation sector collaborated in such a ‘matchmaking and aggregation’ scheme this could help build investor confidence into the sector as a whole, ensuring robust supply chains and match making in accordance with feasibility. This macro infrastructure investment strategy would help expedite a workable transition across all modes of critical transportation, land air and sea! 🌊 🚧✈️. A pipedream perhaps, but in the words of Mr Branson “The world will always assume……” More thoughts on this 👇👇👇👇👇👇 https://lnkd.in/gbp7uNs7 #sustainblefuel #alternativefuel #IMO #shipping #aviation #investors #impactinvestment #ammonia #infrastructure #supplychainmanagement #futurefuelaggregation #radicalcollaboration #AirportsofTomorrow
The sustainable aviation fuels industry is moving up the financing ladder. While demand for institutional capital is rising, the investment case for SAFs is dependent on economies of scale and regulatory incentives. Atharva Deshmukh reports. Our just-published Think Paper 📃 takes advantage of our new #FlyingGreen platform’s FuellingDecarb module to explore the feasibility of producing sufficient, sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) to meet the ReFuelEU blending mandate for long-haul flights, and estimates the volume of electricity necessary to generate the required #SAF. Achieving net zero by 2050 is a considerable challenge for aviation – but, this paper argues, there is considerable scope for advancing net zero goals: SAF, expanding green energy production & replacing older aircraft with newer fuel-efficient models represent a powerful combination for medium to long-term emissions reductions. I invite our #aviation community to explore our #FlyingGreen platform, one of the key deliverables of EUROCONTROL’s Raising The Bar programme, which helps aviation actors evaluate the challenges ahead and measure the progress being made towards scaling the availability of sustainable aviation fuel. Congratulations to EUROCONTROL European Green Sky Director Tânia Cardoso Simões and her #AviationSustainability team headed by Marylin Bastin – and special thanks to sustainability expert, Laurent TABERNIER for leading the technical work on this Think Paper!
