Did you know that July is #DisabilityPrideMonth? Disability Pride Day was first held in 1990 following the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA). 2015 marked the first year that Disability Pride Month was officially celebrated! The Americans with Disabilities Act includes individuals with #addiction and people in #recovery from substances. It's important to remember that not all disabilities are inherently "visual". Practice being more inclusive to people with disabilities by: 🧠 Accept people with disabilities AS THEY ARE: They don't need you to "fix" or change them. 🧠 Educate yourself: Do research or read books on how to best support the disabled community. 🧠 Amplify disabled voices: Share content directly from the disabled community. Start thought-provoking conversations with people from the disabled community; learning directly from the source will give you better empathy and understanding than anywhere else. B/c its Disability Pride Month and we all have a responsibility to combat ableism. ❗ Ableism - is a form of discrimination that places value on certain abilities over others. It means that bodies and minds are held to a standard based on what is considered "normal" or "able" in society. 💡 Because of ableism, people with disabilities are often isolated, less likely to be able to participate in community activities, and experience a myriad of barriers limiting their access to social, work and community activities. 💡 This can result in fewer job opportunities, lower average incomes, higher poverty rates and financial instability. 📣 To honour Disability Pride, I encourage you to reframe your thinking about Disability. Disability IS diversity. 🤝 Consider the Social Model of Disability which regards disability as resulting from external factors like the environmental barriers and discriminatory attitudes. i.e., People with disabilities are only disabled by the world in which they live in which was not designed to work for them. CIE celebrates Disability Pride Month!    #DisabilityPrideMonth is celebrated every July to honor the history, achievements, experiences and struggles of the disability community in recognition of the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society.   The Disability Pride Flag, initially designed in 2019 by Ann Magill, was created to encompass all disabilities. It was revised in 2021 with community input, and is now in the public domain.   The flag's five colors represent different types of disabilities. Red - physical disabilities Gold - neurodivergence White - invisible and undiagnosed disabilities Blue - psychiatric disabilities Green - sensory disabilities #inclusiveeconomy
