An 'alarming reduction' in the small and medium enterprise-sized home building sector in Scotland has been revealed. An analysis of companies involved in the construction of domestic buildings also shows that there has been a 45% increase in dissolutions in 2023 in the sector compared to 2019. According to a report published today by representative body Homes for Scotland, the proportion of new homes sold by those building between three and 49 homes per annum has fallen from around 40% in 2017 to 20% in 2023. The Business Council of Australia proposes a market-led system to speed up housing development by bypassing local councils and asking state and territory governments to rezone land. Our Director: Planning, Alice Maloney, spoke to The Australian Financial Review, highlighting industry support for additional height and density beyond the exhibited heights of the 10 activity centre plans recently exhibited by the Victorian Planning Authority. In response to concerns about whether zoning needed to be standardised nationally, Alice explains that while Victoria has standardised zoning, issues arise from how individual councils apply the zoning framework. "You might have land on one side of a major road in one municipality zoned at a higher level than one the other side in another municipality." BCA's proposal seeks to address housing shortages, streamline the rezoning process, and bring Australia closer to its five-year new homes target. 🏠 Australia's Housing Crunch: New Builds at a 10-Year Low🏗️ According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the 2023-24 financial year marked the slowest pace for new home builds in over a decade. ⏳ A process that took an average of 9 months fifteen years ago now stretches to 12.7 months – a staggering 40% increase in build times. As construction timelines extend, Australia’s housing shortage tightens, impacting communities and future homeowners. 🔑 The solution? Embracing modern, efficient building methods that can streamline construction without compromising quality. #SteelFraming #PerthBuilders #BuildSmarter #ConstructionEfficiency #CenturionFramingSystems #TruecoreSteel #centurionframingsystems #SteelFraming #trusses #steeltruss #steelwalls #construction #sustainablebuilding #perthbuilding #WAbuilding #buildingcrisis

Americans' appetite for more affordable housing is leading a boom for accessory dwelling units (ADUs). As the demand has increased, so has the need for turnkey designs to help local governments and your everyday Average Joe join the party. In my latest for Planning magazine, I spoke with a certified planner from Fayetteville about how ready-made, preapproved ADU designs may help. "One of the benefits of this project and hopefully similar future projects is showing options for attractive housing that adds gentle density to neighborhoods where there is a lot of available land." A year ago, Edmonton rewrote its zoning from scratch. Among other changes, the base zoning in mature nbhds changed to 8 units, 10.5m. What has been the effect? I looked at building permit data to see. For one, we are seeing a large increase in multiplex construction in mature neighbourhoods, precisely! However, we still depend a lot on apartments and single family homes outside the Henday. Read more in my blog post 👇 #yeg #yegcc https://lnkd.in/gdxrBQWi

With more municipalities easing zoning bylaws to allow for converting, renovating, redeveloping and building new housing units on existing property, more and more Canadians are interested in the options available to them. While bylaws are specific to individual communities, there are some common types of housing that you could consider adding to your property.
