We are inescapably on track to wipe out 99% of all global #coral. We need a coordinated, global, fully funded response along the lines of war production, right now. In the #bluecarbon world, we’re all trying to promote action among leadership to restore the ocean and reverse #globalwarming. Here’s some angles that might come in handy. A global conglomerate worth almost $10 trillion and employing half a billion people - shut down forever by a hideous cabal of fossil fuel emitters and government in less than ten years? Infuriating. Act now. What about - a quarter of all fish species will diminish to the point of extinction, including stock fish, decimating our dwindling sources of marine protein, throwing millions into famine? Troubling. Act now. Or, remember the time we banned plastic straws because sea turtles? Sea turtles will no longer exist. Act now. The coral story. It’s not a concerning effect of global warming. It’s an urgent emergency. This isn’t a decline in property values. It’s your house on fire. All our houses on fire. In an emergency, humans are magnificent. Let’s be magnificent. Right now.

Coral reefs are one of the world’s most valuable ecosystems in terms of ecological, economic and cultural capital. But recent reports indicate that 58 to 70 percent of coral reefs globally are threatened by human-associated activities and global bleaching events. Overfishing, boating and recreational impacts, and pollution threaten coral ecosystems and reduce their resilience to environmental stressors. Good news for our coasts! 🪸 New estimates reveal that the world's coral reefs cover 348,000 km ² of the seafloor, largely more than previously estimated. Led by Dr. Lyons from the University of Queensland, this research used advanced satellite imagery to map the reefs, and indicates that 64,000 km ² of coral cover was missing in previous estimates. This represents an area similar to the size of Ireland. While they only cover 0.1% of the ocean floor, coral reefs ecosystems support 30% of all marine species, protect coastlines, and provide livelihoods for millions. BREAKING NEWS: Scientists confirm fourth global coral bleaching event Extensive coral bleaching is sweeping across 53 countries as a result of rising ocean temperatures, posing a severe threat to marine ecosystems. This distressing event, the second occurrence within a decade, endangers the survival of coral reefs, which are vital to supporting 25% of marine species and delivering ecosystem services valued at up to $9.9 trillion annually. The Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef system, has already endured six mass bleaching events, culminating in the loss of 50% of the iconic reef. Immediate and concerted global action is imperative to protect these invaluable “rainforests of the sea" and safeguard marine biodiversity.
