Squiggly Careers in fresh produce!
The term “Squiggly Career” (coined in 2020 by Helen Tupper and Sarah Ellis in the book of the same name), describes the way that our careers tend to change over time and include uncertainty and possibility in equal measures.
In the wider world of work, people don’t usually have linear careers, often moving around from industry to industry and role to role. These varied experiences have been shown to be really useful, providing fresh perspectives and a unique skill set to employers looking to hire the best talent.
But in our industry, whether by chance or design, people tend to get into fresh produce and stay here!
Despite that, there can be lots of talent to be found in unexpected areas.
Someone who has had a very broad and varied career in lots of different departments in fresh produce will have a really good overview of the whole business. In terms of c-suite search, this is invaluable, as candidates like this will have a rich understanding of the business at every level.
For example, someone might start out in quality control, move into supply chain, then sales, then finance… This candidate would bring so many valuable insights as a leader of the organisation and be able to make decisions based on a truly comprehensive understanding of how the business works.
During a search I sometimes experience clients pushing back against candidates who have had a less than linear career. I equally have had clients who like the idea of someone who I think has had “too squigglier” careers…
Either way, I can reassure you when the right candidate comes along, I’ll help you see why they’re the best fit. Executive search goes way beyond box ticking for skills and experience, it is using my experience and knowledge to identify the people that drive your company’s success.
And these people aren’t always the most obvious candidates.

6moLucy Robinson I thought that you were going for a humorous end to your first 2 lines. "..., here's a suggestion..." Change your path to another industry... Or Are you sure you want to keep this path, very sure... ....if so connect with a search...bla bla bla Anyway, thanks, although you didn't write it, I had a good time imagining the suggestion.
