Last week, our London School of Science & Technology (LSST) business students had the pleasure of welcoming Lulu Gunter BA(Hons), PGCE PcET, ICM Dip to discuss the ins and outs of CVs. We're thrilled to see that many of our students have also signed up for support with all things work-related. Thank you to UK Research and Innovation for the opportunity to speak about the various career transitions I have taken to get to the role that I currently hold in helping to grow the NE tech ecosystem; a role that has me pulling on knowledge and experiences from the diverse switches I have had the opportunity to make! Talking about your life and career choices is uncomfortable at the best of times, and on film even more so, but seeing my little girl's face at seeing 'mama on TV' makes it all the worth it.
Also it's really exciting to show people a small snapshot of what the amazing facilities and work we are doing to build the tech ecosystem in the North East! Come visit us at at our Advanced Media Production Studio at PROTO , operated by Digital Catapult and Target3D Ltd | The Mechanics Behind Creativity; a space where companies can experiment with new virtual production technologies and receive support from us to adopt those advanced technologies.
A few things I've learned from my career so far that didn't make the cut:
💡 You never know where your next career move/ project/ idea will come from. Talk to people, listen to stories, be curious... Not only is it fun, but you never know what 'next big thing' might pop up next by connecting the various dots you build.
💡 People make changes in their career for all sorts of reasons, and it usually involves a combination of factors such as family, opportunity, hard work, and sometimes just being in the right place at the right time!
💡 Empathy is key. Spending time with a colleague or a team member to understand who they are, what drives them, and what is challenging for them and then finding ways to support them (formal or informal) is more valuable that anyone can realise.
💡 Always serve your argument with your front foot, and that it's incredibly important to be intellectually generous - collaboration is the only way we are going to solve those grand challenges!
What does switching sectors actually look like? Meet Ashmita Randhawa, DPhil. She left India to study biomechanical engineering in the United States, moved to Brussels to work on consumer products at Proctor and Gamble, then gained an interest in skills development that she decided to pursue at Oxford University.
She now acts as a bridge between academia and university in her role as director of research and development and lead for Digital Catapult North East Tees Valley at Sunderland Software City.

As my husband and I embark on an exciting new chapter at Stanford, designed for seasoned professionals eager to explore new ventures, I'm reflecting on the profound journey that has led us here, filled with gratitude for every experience and every individual who has been a part of my path.
From the sports world—coaches, trainers, and teammates in volleyball, handball, marathons and various endurance sports—you taught me the essence of both victory and defeat. You instilled in me the values of discipline, resilience, and the importance of embracing diversity and challenges. These lessons have been invaluable in every stride of my life.
In the technology sector, where I spent some of my most gratifying years, I was fortunate to collaborate with mentors, managers, experts, CEOs, and dynamic teams. Each of you played a crucial role in shaping my professional journey and personal growth.
To the partners and consultants in the consultancy firms we built, your partnership in driving leadership development and managing organizational culture has been transformative.
I am equally grateful to the executives, CEOs, and board members who provided me with opportunities to learn and grow, enriching my life with their wisdom and trust.
My family, my children and grandchildren, remain my greatest inspiration and motivation, constantly reminding me of the joy and youth that life perpetually offers.
As we step into this unique program at Stanford, I am eager to dive into the unknown, already envisioning the vast opportunities that lie ahead. Life is truly as abundant as our dreams and as expansive as our willingness to pursue them.
Here's to embracing the new cycles life offers, filled with learning, growth, and the excitement of the unknown.

In fast-moving industries, recent grads are often graduating with an education already out of date.
While tenured professors are the best to give you insights into Locke and Kant, to Byron and Zhu Xi, it's the adjuncts who still have one foot in Corporate America you need to network with.
A recent report concludes that incoming #graduatestudents do not get the attention they need during the onboarding process.
Institutions often make the mistake of assuming that graduate students are adequately prepared to succeed in their post-baccalaureate studies because they made it through undergrad. Unfortunately, this assumption neglects the specific intersectional and developmental needs of graduate students.
You can provide prospective and new graduate students with an engaging online orientation during their journey to bridge this often-overlooked information gap.
