This week, Strada Education Foundation is out with the first-ever State Opportunity Index and I’m feeling energized that this will provide a framework for us all to work together to strengthen the connection between education and opportunity. The Index was developed to support states in their efforts in five priority areas. And for me, what resonates most is how each of the five priorities represents a different aspect of the education-to-employment journey. The Index focuses on data, affordability, and how education and employment systems can work better to support students, but it also takes into account the very human priorities of quality coaching and work-based learning experiences. It is a holistic, student-centered approach. The call to action for providing equitable pathways to opportunity is clear and there’s a role for all of us: Institutions, employers, policymakers, and students need access to both education and employment data. Quality coaching is a game changer for students. Affordable education options should be available to all students. Paid internships and apprenticeships can help students find more satisfying jobs with better earning potential. Education programs should better position students for career success. I hope you’ll learn more and join us: https://hubs.la/Q02qV6dk0

Interesting analysis from Bloomberg on Northeastern University's business model--coming to a state near you! #northeastern #highereducation #boston #harvard #ucf #asu #branding #colleges #universities #internships #ivies #admission Northeastern, located in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, was founded in 1898. For decades it was mostly a local school, overshadowed by Harvard, Boston College, Boston University and other institutions in the area. The school started expanding beyond Massachusetts in 2011 with a Charlotte campus, and for the past 10 years it has been adding students and real estate as part of a concerted push to boost its reputation. For many years, a key piece of Northeastern’s educational pitch has been its co-op program, which lets students do paid internships for a semester. It’s been resonating with high school students who have seen the plight of debt-ridden millennials and are focused on getting jobs after graduation. University officials said they’ve heard from about 50 schools interested in merging. https://lnkd.in/eH_kNsEc

"So how do we bring in more career pathway programs, vocational opportunities, and early college? At the end of the day, the question is this: is Massachusetts willing to make the changes? I think we're Blockbuster video in 1992 — we're not seeing Netflix coming." - Massachusetts Commissioner of Education Jeffrey C. Riley underscoring the need for urgency and innovation, and the opportunity to drive "what's next." Thank you to Commissioner Riley for joining us for our latest Competitiveness Conversation event in partnership with Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education. Leading the Future Skills Organisation team to harness the potential of the education and training system to impact learners in the Finance, Technology and Business sectors.
What a fantastic two days at @Monash College in Melbourne for our inaugural National Forum. It's great to have such a diverse cohort of people who are passionate about skills and training and are prepared to help us jump in and move forward. The energy, ideas and conversations have been excellent. Key insights included: Let’s be clear about what industry is actually going to do to help move the dial. The skills needed for work, learning and life are changing all the time — we must enable and promote lifelong learning. We need more people with more skills across the finance, tech and business sectors. We must open up pathways to learning and work to all types of people. We need to recognise the skills needed across the finance, tech and business sectors and ensure they are supported by recognised, high quality micro credentials. In an economy where the nature of work is changing so quickly, it’s time to get serious about the recognition of prior learning. Our VET system is an incredible national institution. We must make it more relevant to our sector. Thank you to all our stakeholders who made the trip, you have provided us such rich insights. Thank you to Jo Mithen, Jane Trewin, Brendan O'Connor, and the amazing team at the Future Skills Organisation for their support. It's time to be bold, ambitious, and get stuff done.

As we kick off #NationalTransferStudentWeek we're highlighting the vital role of transfer pathways in higher education. With 85% of high-wage jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree, it’s essential to bridge the gap between community colleges and four-year institutions. Navigating transfer pathways, and understanding how it works and who is supported, is complex. Together, we can empower more North Carolinians to earn their bachelor’s degrees and thrive in their careers. Learn how through our Advancing Transfer Practices: https://lnkd.in/exz5hmjk

To sustain career pathways work, Career Technical Education (CTE) leaders must leverage existing funds as well as identify new funding streams to support the work for the long term. During the New Skills for Youth (NSFY) initiative, supported by national partners Advance CTE and Education Strategy Group and funded by JPMorganChase, state leaders leveraged Perkins V funding, incorporated initiatives into state budgets, secured private funding, and better aligned funding with program approval processes. Read more about how the six NSFY sites (Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin) featured in Moving Career Pathways Forward: Learning From the New Skills for Youth Initiative have braided funding to sustain their career pathways work here: https://lnkd.in/ey7u-y8E
