Founder at Living the Map, Speaker and Bestselling Author widely known for working 50 Jobs in 50 States and now the Most Traveled Person of America
Lessons from Every City #26 Chiloquin, OR--- I spent Labor Day weekend in Southern Oregon and discovered Train Mountain Museum, home of the world's largest miniature hobbyist railroad, spanning 37 miles. Most people don't know the meaning of Labor Day or other holidays for that matter. Labor Day is a strange celebration without rituals, except for shopping and barbecuing. For most people it simply marks the last weekend of summer and the start of the school year. The holiday’s founders in the late 1800s envisioned something very different from what the day has become. The founders were looking for two things: a means of unifying union workers and a reduction in work time. The organizers of the first Labor Day were interested in creating an event that brought different types of workers together to meet each other and recognize their common interests. Labor Day came about because workers felt they were spending too many hours and days on the job. In the 1830s, manufacturing workers were putting in 70-hour weeks on average. Sixty years later, in 1890, hours of work had dropped, although the average manufacturing worker still toiled in a factory 60 hours a week. These long working hours caused many union organizers to focus on winning a shorter eight-hour work day. They also focused on getting workers more days off, such as the Labor Day holiday, and reducing the workweek to just six days. These early organizers clearly won since the most recent data show that the average person working in manufacturing is employed for a bit over 40 hours a week and most people work only five days a week. We have the same holidays each year, but unless it's required to know the meaning, like Thanksgiving, Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick's Day, we stay in our lane. Now, for the quote, "climb where equipment is required" means to expand your knowledge and learn something even if it doesn't matter. Let's embrace opportunities to expand our knowledge, even when it may seem unnecessary. Keep learning as if it's a necessity.

Did You Know? 🌟 Labor Day isn’t just about celebrating the unofficial end of summer; it's a tribute to the labor movement’s critical role in advocating for worker health and safety. 🛡️ Here’s how Labor Day is linked to health and safety: Advocacy for Safer Conditions: Labor unions fought for safer workplaces, leading to significant improvements in health and safety standards. Birth of Regulatory Bodies: The efforts of the labor movement laid the foundation for the creation of OSHA in 1970, ensuring workplaces are regulated for safety. Eight-Hour Workday: Unions championed the eight-hour workday, reducing worker fatigue and increasing overall safety. Workers' Compensation: Labor Day also highlights the fight for workers' compensation systems, providing support for those injured on the job. Ongoing Awareness: Labor Day serves as a reminder of the continuous need to advocate for safe working environments and uphold workers' rights. This holiday is a powerful reminder of the strides made to protect worker health and safety. Let's honor the legacy by continuing to advocate for safer workplaces! 💪 #LaborDay #HealthAndSafety #WorkersRights #OSHA

Happy "Go Home on Time Day"! ⏰ ⌛ 🏠 An annual reminder that life shouldn't revolve around work alone. Let's work to live, rather than live to work. It's a chance to think about and discuss whether your life is truly balanced between work time and the many non-work parts of life that are often neglected: rest time, leisure time, life admin time, learning time, and volunteering time. It's a clever and important initiative from The Australia Institute's Centre for Future Work, led by Jim Stanford, now in its 15th year. Their website below allows you to calculate how much of your time is "stolen" because of unpaid overtime. https://lnkd.in/gPF8GJ9S
