As an Internationally Educated Nurse with over 6 years of experience and valid CNO registration (NCLEX), I’ve applied to over 200 positions in Ontario’s healthcare system. Despite the widely discussed nursing shortage, I’ve encountered repeated automated rejections, often without feedback. This raises important questions: if there is truly a shortage, why are internationally trained and qualified nurses facing such barriers? Is international experience being underutilized or overlooked in the hiring process? While the narrative of a shortage is widespread, it seems to be at odds with the challenges experienced by available nurses. “More than 1/2 of nurses are likely to switch jobs this year.“ That’s what the headline of this article reads. But where does the “research” come from? A study done by a temporary staffing company ( registry/ locums). Locums nurses and registery staff are always changing jobs. That’s the name of the game. I did registry nursing & locums for most of my career. Every 3-6 months I usually had a new assignment. So, this article is extremely misleading since the study was done by a company employing temporary nurses who usually change “job assignments” pretty frequently. I personally work with 2 medical assistants who are currently in #nursingschool. It was incredibly difficult for both to get into a nursing school since they have long waitlists. I'm so tired of the negativity you see about #nursing on social media. These videos are full of nurses cutting down others, making fun of patients, or verbally attacking the administration. If there was a Nurse Positivity Project channel where you could submit uplifting stories, career advice, self-care tips, and clips about advocacy and awareness, would you do it? Would you be excited to share small clips that could encourage another nurse or even someone considering going to nursing school? I've been thinking about starting an account, but I would need lots of other nurses to submit content so that it's not just me talking. I want it to be the place nurses can turn to when they need 30 seconds of encouragement, empowerment, or a gentle reminder that they are doing great work.
