We’ve wrapped our community roadshow for 2023 and want to thank the 500-plus people who shared their thoughts with us in the towns we visited. Here are some of the key themes we heard from people and the areas they’d like us to focus on in future: 📍 Penshurst - Water quality (including taste, sediment in the old pipes, colour and hardness), our responsiveness and how quickly we resolve issues. 📍 Port Campbell – Sustainability and ways to be more environmentally friendly, our reliability and customer support. 📍 Mortlake – Customer support and cheaper bills. They also had questions about the cloudy water at the end of a pipeline due to a recent flushing - running a tap for a few minutes will clear it. 📍 Terang – Customer support, environmental sustainability and reliability of services. 📍 Simpson – Water reliability, customer support, value for money and sustainability to provide for future generations. 📍 Balmoral – Taste and reliable services. Our water quality team also got a mention as they were seen doing regular water sampling close by. 📍 Macarthur - Our reliability, our influential role in the community, customer support and cheaper bills. 📍 Portland – Sustainability goals, our responsiveness, customer support, and reliability. 📍 Noorat – Sustainability, the reliability of our services, and being supportive and responsive. 📍 Casterton - Protecting the environment and investing in sustainable outcomes. 📍 Warrnambool - Reliable services, ongoing protection of the environment and reasonable and fair bills for all.

Volunteering for the planet can help you feel connected to others in your community about climate change, sustainability, and more! If there’s not an event near you, try to organize your own. Here are some things to keep in mind when organizing a successful volunteer event: • Set your goals - what are you trying to accomplish? • Communicate - make sure hours, location, tasks, etc. are conveyed to volunteers. • Prepare & Plan - assign specific roles, make a schedule, keep yourself and your volunteers organized, • Engage - have enough meaningful tasks that your volunteers are engaged. • Capture the moment - take pictures to inspire others and for the fun of it! Earth Day is a chance to show our planet some love, but it's also a great opportunity for team building! Here are some ideas for how your company can participate: * Organize a volunteer cleanup in your local community. * Host a tree-planting event and get your hands dirty together. * Dedicate a day to brainstorming sustainable practices for your workplace. * Offer educational workshops on environmental issues. * Partner with an environmental organization for a donation drive. In case you haven’t met him yet, let me introduce you to my friend and longest standing collaborator, Leander Lacy. ✨Leander is the one who taught me how to truly be an active listener (by being a good example). ✨Years before others were talking about it, he was the first I heard naming that TRUST is one of the key elements for successful community engagement. ✨Leander’s led some of the most engaging and practical diversity, equity, and inclusion workshops I’ve attended. ✨I quote him all the time about integrating anti-racism practices into strategic planning. ✨He’s my go-to for community engagement questions. He always offers a fair and ethical solution, whatever the question might be. After sharing an office for several years at The Nature Conservancy,* we reconnected during the pandemic to work with Healthy Ocean Coalition. It was our first-ever comprehensive conservation strategic planning process that: ✅Fully embedded justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) as the foundation of the plan ✅Identified clear next steps on how JEDI strategies would turn into action Leander and I complement each other’s skills and I’m grateful that 12 years after we first met, we’re still collaborating on projects for conservation nonprofits. I’d strongly recommend you follow Leander – he’s a trustworthy resource on conservation planning, community assessments, environmental social science, and for JEDI workshops. . . *On the drive home from Leander’s going away party when he left New Jersey, I got stuck in a 4-HOUR TRAFFIC JAM. It was still worth going to his party🤣 Listened to a podcast and made it home eventually. _________________________________ This is post 1 of 3, sharing about Leander's work and the work of his team at Lacy Consulting Services, LLC. Post 2 of 3 will also show collaborative opportunities to partner with both Sustainable Economies Consulting, LLC and LCS, and Post 3 of 3 is a fascinating community engagement case study.
