Acknowledging that mixers are 'uniquely unstable' due to the high centre of gravity and the spinning drum, you'd expect companies to provide the drivers with correct information, given the 28-40 mixer rollovers the UK suffers each year. The effect on stability, handling, and altered sub-chassis limitations is disregarded in favour of a commercial decision to prevent a load security offence. Drum RPM is a critical consideration in mixer rollover incidents. Travelling with the drum rotating at 6-8 RPMs increases the chances of a mixer rollover by 300%. Ignoring the manufacturer's safety instructions in favour of maximising payload is also a critical consideration, even more so when drivers are given training and instructions like these. Legislation requires manufacturers to provide comprehensive instructions, including safe use and safe driving of the mixer. Ignoring these instructions in favour of erroneous information is dangerous and irresponsible but is accepted by many within the industry. Understanding the operating instructions, current legislation, standards, and responsibilities should be the first step before asking the manufacturers to solve the issue of mixer rollovers. With rollover investigations becoming more robust, you must ensure the training, information, and instruction given to drivers and hauliers is accurate and up-to-date, not a commercially based decision that could land you in court. Again, this is why we need standards in the Ready-Mix Concrete industry.
