Raising the Bar in Transport & Logistics Training: Why Competence Matters In the specialised world of transport and logistics, quality training and assessment can be the difference between efficiency and costly mistakes. Unfortunately, not all approaches to training uphold the standards that this high-risk sector demands. Too often, trainers with little or no practical experience are entrusted to deliver knowledge courses, the content of which they have never personally mastered. The result? Courses that feel disconnected from the realities of the job, leaving drivers disengaged and inadequately prepared for the road. At EMPI Awards, we take a different approach—one we believe sets the gold standard for vocational qualifications in the sector. Our SVCA (Site Vehicle Competence Assessments) are built on the core belief that practical experience matters. All assessors must have hands-on experience driving specialised HGVs. This ensures they can fully appreciate the challenges drivers face and deliver assessments that genuinely reflect the skills required for safe, competent driving. But experience alone isn’t enough. That's why our assessors are also required to hold or acquire a certificate or qualification in vocational assessment. This ensures the assessments are not only fair and thorough but also meet the highest professional standards. The combination of practical expertise and formal assessment with training creates a robust evaluation process that promotes real competence—not just ticking boxes. In a sector where safety, compliance, and efficiency are critical, this level of rigor isn’t just preferred—it’s necessary. When training and assessments are done right, everyone benefits: from drivers and employers to the public who share the roads. The standards we set at EMPI Awards aim to do just that—create a safer, more competent workforce, and raise the bar across the entire industry. #assessment #competence #qualification #vocationalqualification #regulated #trusted #innovation #independent #excellence #different #better

It certainly has taken a lot of hard work, but then innovation is never easy. 2 Regulated Vocational Qualifications (unlike any others) in the space of 12 months is a fantastic achievement. With help from industry experts EMPI Awards identified the competence gaps, evaluated the available options and innovated the solution. Looking forward to the next chapters in this story.
EMPI Awards is delighted to announce that our Site Vehicle Competence Assessment (On-Road) (Tippers) is now a regulated Vocational Qualification (VQ). The EMPI Awards SVCA (On-Road) (Tippers) is the second of our planned SQA Accreditation regulated VQs for the specialised transport and haulage sectors and assessment confers the competence of tipper drivers. The EMPI Awards Site Vehicle Competence Assessment is a ground-breaking suite of qualifications that evaluate a driver's competence and safety awareness in the specific context of the quarry, construction sites and other challenging environments. It helps identify areas for improvement and ensures drivers are well-prepared for demanding tasks. Developed in collaboration with industry experts who deeply understand tipper drivers' challenges, it ensures that your drivers receive the highest-quality training and assessment. This new VQ, which runs alongside TipperSURE© training, is a further collaboration with DEK Group NE Ltd and follows our world first SVCA (On-Road) (Mixers) VQ. With more development planned, watch this space... This article discusses the distinction between qualifications, training, and competence, emphasising the importance of recognising these differences, particularly in the context of professional driver certification. It highlights the crucial disparity between being 'trained', 'qualified', and 'competent'. While training equips individuals with skills and knowledge, it doesn't always lead to formal qualifications. Qualifications, on the other hand, are awarded upon successful completion of a program of study and assessment, signifying a higher level of expertise. In the UK, the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) is often misconstrued as a qualification. However, it primarily serves as proof of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) rather than a formal qualification. This misunderstanding stems from a lack of clarity regarding the differences between being trained, qualified, and competent. The EMPI Awards Site Vehicle Competence Assessment (SVCA) and MixerSURE training program address this discrepancy by offering a practical, regulated qualification that assesses drivers' knowledge and skills in real work environments. Endorsed by reputable organisations like DVSA, CLOCS, and SQA Accreditation, the SVCA provides tangible evidence of drivers' qualification and competence, surpassing mandated legally compliant training requirements.
