Could I be any more excited for the next three days given the day and a half I’ve already had in New York. More steps than I thought possible but the only way to savour the city and learn more about its retail offerings is to get out and walk around it. I think every trend on the 2024 ‘trends to watch’ list has been ticked and experienced in person. Yesterday’s pre conference session on Retail Media was actually a fantastic example of why events such as the National Retail Federation conference are so important because it showed consistency in thought-led expertise. When you have different experts from around the world - supplier, agency and retailer experts- talking on a topic such as retail media, all bringing different case studies and angles but ultimately all showing the same results and having the same conclusions, it’s a powerful reinforcement around the key things that are shaping and evolving our retail industry. The couple of hours spent being guided by the formidable Jack Stratten were fantastic and deserve a post of its own so watch out for one to follow with my take on an afternoon in SoHo, taking in an eclectic mix of stores. It starts all over again today as the actual conference and expo itself kicks off. The scale of this gathering of suppliers from around the world is staggering. Looking forward to seeing it all. The phrase ‘child in a sweet shop’ comes to mind.

For me, leading as the head of events at a large enterprise corporation was like getting a "Mini MBA." Throughout my work days, I spent less time actually producing events, and more time on the business side of my role. This manifested in output like: 💡 Working with executives on longer term event strategy (understanding our roadmap was critical) 💡 Pitching what I call the "top contours" of an event plan (by the time I left Shaw, I could do this in under 45 seconds!) 💡 Sitting in on meetings to gather more intel on business plans (this was crucial to our event designs) 💡 Giving strategic guidance to remote teams on their events (building consistency across the enterprise) 💡 Working in executive "war rooms" on large scale impactful projects (here I learned senior level thinking) Check out this post below I put together with my colleague Joanna Radaczynski (she/her), who has extensive, large corporate Chief of Staff experience, about the skills and behavours we learned inside Canada's biggest corporations, and how we apply them every day in our client work at Brand Alive Inc. 👇 What did we miss? Just had a brand workshop where we explored our company's messaging and values at Locale given by Elizabeth Tan and Rishi Banerjee. 🎓💡 Although my role is not directly customer-facing, I found it invaluable to learn how we, as employees, can effectively communicate our brand to clients or even friends/family or those who want to know about what I do. 🤔 Being familiar with our messaging and brand doesn't just enable me to articulate what we do, but it also allows me to represent the company's values. This helps me become a better brand ambassador, ready to confidently represent our company whenever I am approached or asked about the work I or Locale do. 🚀💼
