🚢 First Commercial CO2 Carrier Successfully Completes Sea Trials in China! 🌍 A major milestone in the fight against climate change! Dalian Shipbuilding has successfully completed sea trials for the Northern Pioneer, the first commercial CO2 transport vessel. Operated by Japan’s "K Line" for Norway's Northern Lights project, this innovative vessel will play a crucial role in carbon capture and storage across Europe. 🔹 Vessel Specs: ➡ Length: 426 feet (130 meters) ➡ Capacity: 7,500 cubic meters of liquid CO2 ➡ Special Features: Two full-pressure C-type cargo tanks that withstand temperatures as low as -35°C. The Northern Pioneer will be pivotal in the Northern Lights initiative, a joint venture by Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, designed to capture and store CO2 from industrial sites across Northern Europe, with a goal to inject 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 this year. 🔋 The vessel exceeded speed expectations and features advanced design elements like a single wind rotor, which reduces daily fuel consumption by nearly 1 ton! 🌬️ As Europe pushes toward ambitious carbon capture and storage (CCS) goals, this vessel will play a key role in transporting CO2 from Northern Europe to storage vaults under the seabed in Norway. One Team, One Vision: Our Visit to Southern Spars UK Last week, the North Windships team had the pleasure of visiting our colleagues at Southern Spars UK in Fareham. As part of the North Technology Group, North Windships and Southern Spars work as a unified team, working hand in hand to advance marine innovation. Our collaboration with Southern Spars, North Sails, Future Fibres, and other entities within the group allows us to harness a diverse range of skills and expertise. This synergy is crucial for developing innovative technologies such as #DynaRig and #AeroRig, which are designed to meet the needs of modern cargo ships and reduce CO2 emissions. During our visit, we took the opportunity to review our achievements from the first half of 2024 and lay out our strategy for the remainder of the year. The week was filled with interesting discussions on how we can continue to push the boundaries of wind propulsion technology and make maritime transport more sustainable, through collaboration from across the North Technology Group. This was a vertical cylinder with aerodynamics similar to an airplane wing to create lift/force, and a shutter and fan system to draw air in for greater efficiency. In testing, the thrust coefficient produced was between three and four times that of Marconi sails, making it a hugely attractive, and economical, green propulsion solution.
