💡 Methanol is a promising low-cost hydrogen carrier given its high energy density, ease of transportation, and lower risk compared to ammonia. M2X Energy Inc. is dedicated in minimizing the cost and carbon intensity of the integrated process from crude methanol production, transporting methanol as low-cost carrier for hydrogen, then reforming methanol to hydrogen at point of use. One question that we are particularly interested in is if the energy intensive upgrading step can be bypassed for an electrochemical route to reform M2X's low-carbon methanol to hydrogen. To answer the question Chen Hsiang-Sheng (Johnson) is working towards understanding the associated energy penalties when crude methanol is used 'as-is' in electrolysis. Exciting advancements in hydrogen production for refineries! Methane pyrolysis, a sustainable method, reduces CO₂ emissions by converting CH₄ into C and H₂. This process, requiring high temperatures, offers various reactor types such as thermal, catalytic, and molten media reactors for efficient hydrogen production. Efficiency metrics like thermal efficiency, Faradaic efficiency, and carbon conversion efficiency play crucial roles. Key technical challenges include high temperature requirements, reactor material durability, and solid carbon management. To overcome these challenges, the integration of renewable energy sources and heat recovery systems is essential. In refineries, methane pyrolysis can be integrated into hydrogen production units, waste heat utilization, and carbon management processes. 🔊 𝐀 '𝐋𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲' 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 Waymouth and his Stanford team are pioneering liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) for renewable energy storage. Their research, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, focuses on efficiently converting and storing electrical energy in liquid fuels like isopropanol and acetone, which can be transported and used as hydrogen sources without emitting carbon dioxide. They've developed a novel catalytic system using iridium and cobaltocene that converts protons and electrons into isopropanol directly, bypassing the inefficient production of hydrogen gas. This innovation aims to enhance energy storage capabilities, potentially supplementing lithium-ion batteries in grid-scale and mobile applications. Future efforts include exploring more affordable catalysts, such as iron, to scale up LOHC systems for broader industry and renewable energy use.
