While #EIFS has long been used as an #exteriorcladding for the #hospitality and #entertainment industries (e.g. the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin and the Bellagio are just two excellent examples of EIFS projects), EIFS - especially EIFS with Drainage - has become a "go-to" cladding in the #healthcare sector as well. The Mayo Clinic's Expansion in Phoenix, AZ is a case in point. The project expanded three major areas of the Mayo Clinic’s North Phoenix campus, including vertical expansion of the clinic and horizontal expansions of the hospital and east cafeteria buildings as part of the hospital’s larger goal of increasing its patient capacity and laying down the foundations for further expansions down the road. Designed by Shepley Bulfinch and built by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., this 330,000 sq ft, $145-million expansion project won a "Best Project, Health Care and Award of Merit, Safety" by Engineering News-Record Southwest. With respect to the exterior #cladding, the article below (subscription may be required) makes the following point. "The project deployed a unitized #curtainwall skin system for the clinic’s vertical expansion. The unitized panels allowed for large sections to be prefabricated, simplifying installation, minimizing disruption to the existing facility and reducing the construction schedule to deliver care to patients sooner... This approach not only accelerated construction but also reduced the risks associated with traditional welding methods." This project recently won an "Award of Merit" at the EIFS Industry Members Association (EIMA)'s 2023 Architectural "Hero" Awards too. The project entry form mentioned that the expansion of this hospital "was designed using EIFS to match the existing main building. Prefabricated panels were chosen over field applied EIFS because of lower cost to install, reduced installation time, room for scaffolding, and safety to pedestrian traffic. The façade was comprised of 1,500 panels, which were 24 feet by 15 feet in size." https://lnkd.in/ghcUfcMw Even though RSMeans Data from Gordian points out that EIFS is MUCH less expensive than traditional, heavyweight cladding materials like #brick,#stone, #precast, #curtainwall and #metal panel, it is interesting to note that the cladding is frequently used on major projects - commissioned by some of the world's largest companies and organizations - on projects costing hundreds of millions of dollars - and frequently more. But when one understands that EIFS with Drainage offers a combination of #aesthetics, #performance, #energyefficiency and #financialvalue that #oldfashioned materials just can't match, then the use of EIFS makes sense. With #continuousinsulation integrated into a singular wall system that can mimic #brick, #stone, #wood, #metal, #stucco and #multiclad exteriors, there has never been a better time to consider EIFS for a #newconstruction or #retrofit project. www.eima.com #eima

Did you know that operating theatres are 3 to 6 times more energy intensive that the rest of a hospital? Wow! The NHS in Scotland is working hard to make theatres greener with its National Green Theatres Programme. I was glad to help in a small way by reviewing this report and its recommendations moving forward. Key messages and my interpretations in brackets (which apply to much more than just theatres): 1.There is limited published evidence (so we have to work to get it by doing things differently and sharing our learning) 2. A reduction in resource use (stuff we use) can mean higher up front costs in the short term (but cost saving in future so let's plan longer term and invest in sustainable care by doing things differently with fewer single use products) 3. Primary prevention of surgical conditions can greatly reduce the need for surgery (prevention is better than cure and cutting into people, teach people how to live their lives in the best of health with a National Healthy Service rather than a National Illness Service) 4. Small changes can lead to environmental sustainability improvements (every little counts, switch off when not in use, don't use or unpack what you don't need) 5. Barriers to improvements in practice include lack of leadership, workload pressures and limited knowledge (step up, share what works, listen to staff who know the system, think "what if we could" and do it!) Breaking News: Swedish First Hill Expansion Underway Swedish Health Services is embarking on the highly anticipated North Tower project at its First Hill campus. Projected to open in Fall 2027, this 12-story building is our organization’s most ambitious endeavor in our 114-year history. Opcare's Isle of Man Team recently presented at the Manx Care Therapies Event! ⭐🦿 This event gathered together Isle of Man AHPs to celebrate achievements within the health service. Will Whittle, from our Isle of Man Prosthetics and Orthotics team presented a section showcasing the improvements in patient care from scanning, as well as a reduction in waiting times for orthotic patients through an increase in in-house manufacture of insoles. We also showcased progress in the digitizing of some documentation in line with Manx Care's data policies: 🏆 50% of insoles are now manufactured in-house for our patients, which has drastically reduced wait times. 🏆 The team can now scan patients with structure light for both Prosthetic and Orthotics, allowing them to make a wider range of devices, as well as more quickly and efficiently capture individual shapes. 🏆We've implemented a new system to digitalize patient records, enabling us to easily and quickly repeat orders if required. #Opcare #Prosthetics #Orthotics #Presentation

Off-campus is the new on-campus for build-to-suit medical outpatient and specialty hospital projects. Over the past 24 months, it has become incredibly challenging to close on-campus MOB and specialty hospital projects when a ground lease is involved. Hospitals, lenders and developers can't seem to get on the same page with respect to use restrictions and purchase options. This is causing more MOB and specialty hospital projects to move off-campus. What are others seeing in this space?

Partnership with Rigshospitalet gives access to high quality healthcare data 🔬 Surgical Safety Technologies Inc. (SST) is a New York-based patient safety company with a mission of improving safety in surgeries. Their Operating Room (OR) Black Box records and analyzes all operation room data to minimize risks and improve patient outcomes. In 2023, they entered into a strategic alliance with Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet to analyze causalities between events in the operation room and the patient outcome to optimize learning. Denmark’s immense ecosystem of life science companies and homogenous, high-quality healthcare system were part of the explanation, SST decided on a partnership with the Danish hospital. “The partnership with SST is important because it illustrates the opportunity and willingness to create public-private partnerships in Denmark.
