In my Wine Industry Advisor op-ed: the finest Zinfandels of today are now far more comfortable "in their own skin," tasting like where they come from rather than bigger-the-better. This much was clear at the last big ZAP Grand Tasting in San Francisco: Zinfandel has "grown up" because more and more consumers are demanding that of the varietal category. Wine Market - A bleak picture for those wine producers operating at the EUR8 (US$8.75) or less end of the per-bottle retail price ladder. The prognosis is based on a low level of engagement with younger LDA consumers coupled with high inventory levels at the distributor and retailer levels and the recently forecast low wine production figures globally for this year It’s important that we adapt to the world we live in today, which has given the whole wine industry an additional level of complexity. The last four years have included a lot of energy and more than a few dollars researching and tasting non-alcoholic wine, with a special interest in the changes around dealcoholized wine. Spending a significant amount of time around an agricultural product (fifteen years buying, selling, teaching wine) you begin to understand seasons and their impact. To see this tide of a large publication covering the increased quality and availability of dealcoholized wine is encouraging because at the same time we're seeing continued coverage on the down trend of folks drinking wine at all - see Q2 article from Reuters: https://lnkd.in/ghdinw-c I recently wrote about the vast opportunities with on premise offerings of dealcoholized wine, and what developing a zero proof program looks like (inclusivity and more dollars to the bottom line). You can check that out here (now with the option to listen!): https://lnkd.in/g32fT_Rt https://lnkd.in/gQqJSApF

Thank you Liz for the voice of reason and balance. It often feels like the general sentiment in our industry is a doomsday attitude when all signs show positive growth, highest per-capita consumption in the U.S. market when including the non-alc wine: 1) as it should be, being grown as a wine grape; 2) harvested and delivered to wineries to produce wine; 3) finished as wine; 4) delivered to wholesalers as wine; 5) delivered to and merchandised at retailers as wine; 6) and consumed by consumers as wine…. …yet the growth of non-alc is being treated as negative consumption in “table wine”. These metrics are simply inaccurate. Everything is clear that consumption continues to rise overall. With a global balancing of grape supply and international trade policy balancing, wine is as strong or stronger than ever! #sustainablepolicy #internationaltrade #winebusiness #wineconsumption #winemakersforum Bill Tolar Christopher Sawyer Elizabeth Kelly MW
