New (& very cool) MIT Sloan research by Christian Catalini, Maria Roche, and Alexander Oettl emphasizes the importance of physical proximity for knowledge spillovers among startups. Their study found that startups within 20 meters of each other in a coworking space have a higher chance of adopting similar technologies, highlighting the benefits of face-to-face interactions. This research is a great reminder of the value of early-stage interactions and how being close can lead to innovation and growth. As we navigate the in-office vs. remote work debate, this is a strong case for maintaining some level of in-person collaboration. Thanks for sharing, Kostas Stamatiadis! https://lnkd.in/emEsxdBW

Close proximity is the key to knowledge spillovers among startups As the in-office versus work-from-home debate continues, new MIT Sloan research makes the case for at least a little bit of face time. Distance might make the heart grow fonder, but when it comes to information sharing, physical proximity is more desirable. Recently published research from MIT Sloan finds that knowledge spillovers among startups in a coworking space are more likely to occur when those startups are within 20 meters of one another. Go beyond those 20 meters — about the width of an Olympic swimming pool — and the spillover “greatly reduces,” write MIT Sloan research scientist Christian Catalini and his co-authors, Maria P. Roche and Alexander Oettl. More specifically, the type of knowledge spillovers that “help in the selection of technologies from a large choice set and that lead to the integration of external knowledge” occur at very short distances, the authors state in their paper, “Proximate (Co-)Working: Knowledge Spillovers and Social Interactions.” While the study’s focus is on startups and their decisions, the research also contributes to the ongoing discussion on how best to design workspaces for knowledge sharing, according to Catalini. https://lnkd.in/dUYm2ATR By Meredith Somers

Great to see the Mereseyway Innovation Centre reaching 85% occupancy in just over a year! Its not unusual for flexible workspaces like this to reach a stable occupancy (c.85%) in two years or more so it's impressive to see the Innovation Centre bucking the trend! 👊 This should provide comfort to other local authorities that flex can flourish outside of city centres and I'd urge all local authorities to consider including flex within their town centre regeneration strategies. Such spaces are essential for the support of small businesses (which make up 99.9% of all UK businesses) and can play a crucial role in stimulating business growth, increasing town centre footfall and reviving old unloved buildings (often attracting grant funding for these very reasons). 💰 💰 Keep up the good work Oxford Innovation Space and Stockport Council! If you require any advice around your flexible workspace strategy, our team in Manchester are well placed to provide support. After my last post about #coworking trends, many of you reached out about micro-communities. Let me expand on why I believe these are revolutionizing the coworking model: Picture this: A 500-person coworking space that feels like a collection of intimate 30-person startups, each with its own culture but benefiting from the larger ecosystem. We're seeing these micro-communities emerge organically around: 👍 Industry clusters (FinTech founders sharing compliance insights) 👍 Growth stages (Series A companies supporting each other through scaling challenges) 👍 Work styles (Early birds forming 7AM mastermind groups) 👍 Shared missions (Climate tech innovators collaborating on solutions) The magic happens in the intersection. A UX designer from the fintech cluster collaborates with the sustainability hub on an ESG dashboard. A growth marketer from the e-commerce tribe mentors an early-stage healthtech startup. This isn't just about random networking anymore. It's about curated serendipity. Curious: What's the most unexpected collaboration you've seen emerge in a coworking space? And for space operators: How are you facilitating these micro-community connections? #Coworking #CommunityBuilding #Innovation #FutureOfWork #Collaboration #WorkplaceCulture Etherea Coworking
