The Voice of the User: Integrating Inclusion into Innovation Practices 🗓️ 26 June 🕒 11h00-12h30 User inclusion in innovation is increasingly the focus of policy rhetoric at both organizational and societal levels. Extensive research has demonstrated the potential contribution that users can make, both at the "front end" of innovation with their ideas and insights and downstream, facilitating adoption and diffusion. However, translating this potential into practice remains challenging. We need to understand more about how to hear user voices, amplify their insights, and provide practical channels for inclusion to ensure full co-creation of innovation. This workshop will bridge the gap between the potential and practice of user inclusion in innovation. Participants will explore "boundary innovation spaces" where user co-creation is prioritized and delve into various tools and techniques that promote active user involvement. Through interactive sessions and best practice examples from across Europe, attendees will gain insights into effective strategies for integrating user voices in innovation processes. It will equip participants with the knowledge to foster inclusive innovation environments within their organizations, ensuring that user insights are not just heard but are instrumental in driving innovation forward. Moderator: Tatiana Iakovleva, Professor of Entrepreneurship in Stavanger Business School, Stavanger Center for Innovation Research, Universitetet i Stavanger (UiS) Speakers: elin merethe oftedal, Professor of Change Management and Innovation at the Institute of Media and Social Sciences at the Universitetet i Stavanger (UiS) Carla S. Business development | Commercialization SSH | Tech Transfer | Outgoing enthusiast with a sincere and humorous approach | PRINCE2® certified
Lately, time has flown by. I have been working on 5 active projects within the humanities and social sciences, focusing on finding new audience for the research, impact and commercialization. Open Entrepreneurship DK has established a task force for SHAPE, in which I am actively participating. It’s a unique collaboration across all universities, and I have the pleasure of working with a group of engaged and talented individuals. 🙌 We’ve initiated small projects that allow us to test and gain deeper insights into the needs within the humanities and social sciences. The potential for SHAPE is immense, and there are many funding opportunities. However, it can seem overwhelming for researchers. We are working on preparing funds and investors to understand what they can specifically request to attract the right cases. Conversely, we are also helping researchers to articulate the impact their research can have. I'm proud of what we’ve accomplished so far and have been reminded that you can’t directly compare STEM and SHAPE. I’ve also learned that there isn't resistance toward the humanities and social sciences; it’s our task to lead and be curious. By taking one case at a time, we can establish a shared understanding and define the desired impact. 💡 The next month is all about finalizing funding applications, and I'm looking forward to attending the Nordic Innovation Fair next week – perhaps I’ll see some of you there? Have a great day! ☀️ #SHAPE #SSH #commercialisation #TTO #humanities #socialscience

Both fundamental and applied research were underscored as essential elements in the journey toward groundbreaking innovations. It’s not just about creating products; it’s about transforming the way we think, question, and explore new frontiers. 3.Proactive Corporate Support is Paramount: A resounding call emerged for the corporate world to take a more proactive stance in supporting researchers. Beyond traditional funding, there’s a need for innovation and endowment funds that empower researchers to pursue ambitious projects. This shift is critical in ensuring that innovative ideas have the resources they need to flourish. 4. Cultivating an Innovation Culture: Panelists emphasized the importance of fostering an innovation culture within organizations. This involves creating environments that encourage risk-taking, curiosity, and interdisciplinary collaboration. A culture that embraces failure as a steppingstone to success was deemed essential for nurturing a vibrant research-driven innovation ecosystem. 5. Global Collaboration for Impact: The conversation expanded to the global stage, with a call for increased international collaboration. By breaking down geographical barriers, sharing resources, and tapping into diverse perspectives, we can amplify the impact of research-driven innovations on a global scale. 6. In Catalonia we have been developing defining and testing the concept of shared agendas for 5 years now, combining and integrating multiple frameworks, methodologies and practices in collaboration with researchers and policy makers, in Catalonia and Europe. We have a debate about wether shared agendas are missions or not… Sometimes we talk about challenge-driven ecosystem-based missions. After reading the document from Ingrid Burkett from the Griffith Centre for Systems Innovation “Challenge-led Innovation. Organising for systems innovation at scale” (https://lnkd.in/dKq_eicX) I'm more inclined to characterise shared agendas as an example of challenge-led innovation, being their main aim “using various mechanisms to focus, align and direct innovation across diverse fields and sectors towards addressing the key issues of our times”: Main attributes of Challenge-led Innovation: 1. “Holding BOLD AMBITIONS FOR INNOVATION to move towards future states that provide fundamentally better outcomes for people, places and the planet 2. INTENTIONALLY USING A RANGE OF LEVERS to incentivise, enable, and sustain multiple innovations across and within the chosen systems context 3. Contributing to RETHINKING THE FUNDAMENTALS of how current systems and structures work, and support cultures that are open to new paradigms and possibilities 4. Providing spaces and PLATFORMS THAT ENABLE DIVERSE ACTORS and stakeholders to convene around shared goals, harnessing their collective intelligence and acting in ways that have potential for better outcomes 5. Establishing and maintaining mechanisms that ENABLE COHERENCE (such as networked governance and information flows) and connect innovations in ways that make the whole more productive than the sum of the parts” Very interesting the approach of portfolios of initiatives and projects as Learning Infrastructures, shifting the focus from goals and challenges towards “portfolios and projects as the engine rooms for a democratised approach to innovation”. Very relevant too “shifting measurement from downstream to upstream by moving away from targets which rely on lag indicators” towards progress in the desired directions, focusing on dynamics and on learning (we are working on this with INGENIO (CSIC-UPV) and Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC) using the transformative innovation outcomes). For sure 2024 will bring new conceptual and implementation developments! Appropriate collaborative spaces is the topic of my next Metropolia University of Applied Sciences blog. This came about as I have noticed both in the private and public sector that spaces can play a big role in creating the right environment for discussing and practicing topics such as creativity, innovation, problem solving, etc. I love the photo that the blog editors chose for this one. It reflects the situation for many in organisations that want to show/create more innovations but don't think that they need to do anything to the infrastructure or the tools that are available to create more innovators. Of course, the space is just one of these to consider. #innovators #innovations #business #HigherEducation #LearningSpaces #Learning #teaching #hiiltajatimanttia #metropolia TKI Metropolia RDI

DAY 5 of the OpenInnoTrain Summer School concluded with the culmination of the weeks intensive program in the form of 9 Team #Research Pitches. The 9 diverse teams (discipline, culture, academic experience, gender..) had strictly 5-minutes to deliver their pitch to our three brilliant reviewers, in front of the full Summer School cohort. The reviewers, listened to the pitches thoughtfully and expertly challenged the teams to think both deeply and broadly about their research project. In doing this, they unlocked diverse ways of seeing the same research problem, leveraging their own significant experience and expertise, to highlight critical aspects to consider through the frame of creating impact through their research. Everyone in the room learnt a great deal from both the pitches and the reviewer questions and comments! We sincerely thank all three reviewers for the generosity of their time, willingness to share their expertise, experience, and for offering us a window into how they think about, and approach, creating societal impact through research using an impact mindset. Kudos for leaving us all with much to think about Professor Anne-Laure Mention, Director, Global Business Innovation Enabling Impact Platform, RMIT University | OpenInnoTrain Chief Investigator extraordinaire; Emeritus Professor Sally Davenport MNZM, Director at Science for Technological Innovation (SfTI), Victoria University of Wellington; Ulrika Hurt, Lecturer Sustainable Value Chains (with significant experience in also working both for and with the European Commission) TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology University of Technology, TalTech.
