It was a great pleasure and opportunity to participate to the RSB annual Conference yestarday! Here some take-home messages on SAF development and certification:
-> The way how bio-based and e-fuels will complement each other on the path to a climate-neutral aviation sector is the next urgent challenge,
-> The risk for developing countries to be left behind regarding SAF production is real. This despite the fact that developing countries are potentially well suitable for SAF production, and could profit from the co-benefits in terms of GDP and jobs;
-> A feedstock is not sustainable or not sustainable itself – the key point is how it is produced;
-> Kenia, South Africa and India are running high-level political dialogs on SAF development and are now moving forwards to implementation strategies;
-> The G7 and G20 events in 2024 will provide great chances for international agreements in the field of SAF – Italy here is the European front-runner;
-> The Global Biofuels alliance kick-off meeting took place in Sept. 2023. Future activities in the SAF sector are under development;
-> LCA methodologies for biofuel certification must be harmonized – credibility, transparence and setting a level playing field are key;
-> Acknowledging of, and interconnections between, different Book & Claim registries would bring benefits to all actors involved – the challenge cannot be missed!
This week is the RSB Annual Conference 2023, in partnership with Boeing, Gevo, Inc., IFF and Vitol! We look forward to welcoming our friends, partners and RSB members in Geneva, as we mark 10 years of the RSB Association!
