🪴 The wonder plant! 🪴 Sentayhu Belachew (48) knew that Gesho was a useful plant, his grandfather had a small shrub which he used to flavour Tej, the local honey beer. But when Sentayhu joined a small farmers group run by SUNARMA he learned it could do so much more. This included: 🪴 Its roots stabilised the land helping to prevent erosion. 🪴 The wood from the mature shrub could be used as firewood. 🪴 The ripe berry (that looks a bit like a Sloe from a Blackthorn) could be eaten if it was harvested before the birds feasted on it! 🪴 The attractive shrub gave shade which meant he could grow other plants in between the rows receiving shelter from the elements and helping conserve soil water moisture. 🪴 The bark has medicinal value including antimicrobial properties, alleviating inflammation, it is an anti-oxidant and even protects the liver! Hello,, As you know I'm helping to feed a local community in Kenya that includes people with disabilities, orphans, the elderly, and other vulnerable members. I’m raising funds for farm tools and seeds and doing so based on my training as an organic permaculture farmer. Here is a breakdown of the budget: - 4 wheelbarrows @50 a total of $200 - 3 spades @$5 a total of $15 - 4 rakes @4 a total of $16 - 10 jembes @10 a total of $100 - 5 Fork jembes @10 a total of $50 - 10 watering cans @$6 a total of $60 - 3 slashes @$3 a total of $9 - 3 Pangas @$4 a total of $12 - 10 pairs of gumboots @10 a total of $100 - 5 barrels @40 a total cost is $200 SEEDS Seeds worth $400 consisting of different varieties. As we continue our work in the Bahamas and in other areas impacted by crisis- we are looking to restore mangroves. How do they connect to our work increasing food security- well- mangroves are amazing:) without them so many species of marine life struggle to find safe spawning habitats. (Let alone the fact that they are carbon sequestering powerhouses and help build land mass). There’s a lot of “stuff” in the world that gets thrown away all the time, and animal care organisations are no exception. But what if we could find new homes for those items instead? Rather than unused or unwanted materials from one department being thrown away, we can try to find new purposes for our unneeded “stuff”. Wood scraps from a construction project may inspire new climbing structures or leftover fabric scraps could become toys. If maintenance invests in new drills or other tools, the old ones can be donated to other teams who can use those tools creatively, or to upskill themselves, rather than sitting unused in a toolbox or the back corner of a dark dusty shed! Can you create a communal “donation” area, or an online space where staff can collaborate, share, swap, donate, and browse? #reuse #recycle #repurpose #animalcare
