🚀 Keeping track of Ariane 6! 📡 #DidYouKnow that ESA ground stations will track the debut flight of Europe’s new #Ariane6 rocket? Located respectively in the Azores and in West Australia, the Santa Maria and New Norcia stations will monitor key phases of the flight, such as active thrust and payload separation. The gathered telemetry and video will be used to analyse the flight, ensure safety on the ground and optimise future launches, making them even more precise and reliable. The two ESA ground stations belong to the #Estrack network of deep-space antennas, that are developed, maintained and upgraded at #ESOC, in cooperation with European industry. In the case of launches, it is not the main antennas that are not used, as they are better to operate more distant spacecrafts, but side ones which offer a complement to the Ariane launcher tracking station network — operated by the French space agency, CNES (Centre National d'Études Spatiales). “We have been hard at work preparing Santa Maria and New Norcia for the first Ariane 6 launch,” says Gerhard Billig, Launcher Tracking Service Manager.   OHB ITALIA WILL DELIVER THE SECOND BATCH OF EAGLET 2 SATELLITES FOR IRIDE CONSTELLATION OHB Italia S.p.A. with the second batch of #Eaglet2 increased to twenty-four satellites its important contribution to the national “Constellation of Constellations” #IRIDE.   Twelve additional satellites, including Flight Operations Segment (#FOS) will be completed in two years. The industrial consortium, led by OHB Italia, does not change and it is involving Telespazio, Optec, and Aresys as main partners.   IRIDE stands as one of the most prominent European space programs in the field of #EarthObservation. Its realization is set to occur in Italy through the Government's initiative, leveraging resources from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) supplemented by the funds of the National Supplementary Plan (PNC). IRIDE is a satellite system which is expected to be operational by June 2026, under the coordination of the European Space Agency - ESA, with the involvement of the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana. The final countdown sequence for flight #VV24 begins: today's Launch Readiness Review (LRR) clears Sentinel-2C for liftoff 🚀. Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has signed a 107-Million-Euro contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) for the supply of 6 additional radar-based satellites dedicated to the Italian Earth observation constellation, IRIDE. This second batch of satellites, as the previous batch of six, will rely on the innovative and scalable NIMBUS (New Italian Micro Bus) platform. Built by Thales Alenia Space, the high-performance NIMBUS will be produced rapidly and is designed for high-revisit and high-capacity constellations in addition to very high throughput. For the Italian Earth Observation Constellation IRIDE, Thales Alenia Space will build a total of 13 satellites: 12 small-sized satellites based on SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology and 1 satellite based on optical technology.

📣 Yahsat, the UAE’s flagship satellite solutions provider announced today that it has contracted 📃✍🏻 Airbus Defence and Space for its new geostationary telecommunications 🛰️ , Al Yah 4 (“AY4”) and Al Yah 5 (“AY5”). Contract includes two Airbus ARROW spacecraft platforms for future deployment in low Earth 🌎 altitude orbit. Airbus will design 👨🏻🎨 and build 👊🏻 the AY4 and AY5 satellites based on the Eurostar Neo platform and will also provide ground control 📡 segment components. The flexible multi-band payloads can be fully reconfigured while in orbit, capable of adjusting the coverage area, capacity and frequency “on the fly” to meet evolving mission scenarios. Both spacecraft will have a design life of 15 years and are planned to be launched 🚀 in 2027 and 2028 respectively. Alain Fauré, Head of Space Systems at Airbus, said: “Today marks a real milestone with Yahsat selecting our pioneering fully flexible satellite technology. Sixteen years ago, we signed our first contract with Yahsat, bringing the first sovereign telecommunications satellite to the UAE. Hello all! I am elated to announce the acceptance of my abstract titled "Optimizing SmallSat Constellation for Enhanced STM in LEO” at the record breaking 75th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) IAC2024 to be held in Milan, Italy. The objective of the project also quite aligns with the conference theme "Responsible Space for Sustainability". This project I am working on is a collaborative group project between Small Satellites and Space Safety and Sustainability project groups of Space Generation Advisory Council. This project focuses to devise a small satellite constellation solution in LEO to provide detection, tracking, and characterization services of objects between 1 cm and 10 cm. The satellites are equipped with COTS telescopes capable of detecting small space objects up to 1 cm or better. The essence of this endeavor lies in optimizing the orbit selection for constellation deployment, the number of satellites for constellation design, and the scanning pattern to ensure thorough coverage, along with enabling frequent follow-up measurements. The work that we will be doing in coming months will establish a foundational framework for future research on constellation design and scanning patterns utilizing in-space optical sensors to tackle the escalating issue of space debris amidst the evolving space environment. Conformal retrodirective TM system for future generation space launch vehicles. Congratulations to European Space Agency - ESA for the successful launch of Ariane 6 on its inaugural flight from the European launch center in French Guiana (Kourou) at 16:00 local time on 9 July, successfully placing numerous payloads into orbit. Our researcher Dr Neil Buchanan and his team have been actively working (sponsored by ESA) on developing a robust #telemetry (TM) system for future generation of launch vehicles (with Ariane 6 in mind), based on the #retrodirective principle. Their TM system is compatible for challenging environments, which includes high variation in attitude and acceleration of the platform. The system shows fast tracking with update rate of up to 167 Hz. The proposed system provides full 360 degrees field of view coverage to maintain the link. Their proposed concept exhibits fast tracking of the incoming #beacon signal for extremely wide field of view, and is capable of handling fast doppler shifts in frequency.
