Meet Audrey Acosta. Audrey wasn't as prepared for her 100th day of school as she would have liked to be, so in lieu of hair rollers, we resorted to empty toilet paper tubes (still pretty cute though, yeah?). One day, you might be 100, too. Do you have a plan? Is it built on something more sturdy than toilet paper tubes? Be prepared. Don't be like Audrey. #financialplanning #retirementplanning

All children love rainbows right?! A whole rainbow of colours are used in a variety of ways in our classes to motivate and brighten the day. Coloured cones are not just cones here, they are used imaginatively to colour match, perhaps taking the red cone ‘fish’ to the red hoop ‘house’. Talking about these colours during class can help toddlers become more familiar with the names and characteristics of different colours, which can help them as they begin to learn about more complex concepts like colour mixing. We learn and play with colours together! #earlylearning #earlyyears #earlyyearsdevelopment #physicaleducation #miniathletics

Interesting reflection for this week’s post; an interaction with my toddler that simplifies and illustrates the power of open questions. Situation: my 2 year old tips out her full set of Duplo all over the floor (which makes a nursery setting) and starts putting parts together to build that nursery Me: Are you building a nursery Eleri? Eleri: No! Me: ok, what are you building Eleri? Eleri: I am building a nursery with a sjdnfjcksmsndndoxkskkdkdhcujsnsjdjsjd (incoherent toddler babble) and they painting and she needs to go on the potty Toddler babble aside, The quality of the answers we get comes from the quality of the questions we ask 👌

Playgrounds are vibrant hubs of activity where children's laughter and exploration thrive. These outdoor sanctuaries are where memories are made, friendships are forged, and countless skills are honed through play. Within this realm of joyful abandon, safety must remain an unwavering priority, ensuring that each child's adventure is not only exhilarating but also free from harm. While the vigilant eyes of caregivers and meticulously designed play equipment contribute significantly to safety, an often-overlooked factor quietly underpins the well-being of these young adventurers: the compaction of playground surfacing material. https://lnkd.in/g3drUiTF

Children’s Cuddles and Dogs’ Freedom of Choice. 🐶🤗 A study released on December 14, 2023, by researchers from the The University of Salford and funded by Dogs Trust considers the dynamics of child-dog interactions and the importance of a dog’s freedom of choice when it comes to physical affection such as cuddling. In the paper published in the CABI Human-Animal Interactions Journal, the team led by PhD candidate Anna Baatz conducted family interviews to analyze the implications of children between the ages of 7 and 12 engaging with family dogs. This research addresses a rise in dog bites within the home and seeks to enhance safe interactions between children and dogs. Researchers discovered that while family dogs may display positive behaviors when they initiate or consent to cuddles, they can react “negatively” (defensively)—through growling, snapping, or showing other signs of distress—when cuddles are forced upon them without their choice. This suggests that, although cuddling with pets is a source of joy for many humans, children must learn that dogs should have the autonomy to engage or withdraw from such interactions. The study’s findings emphasize that the answer is nuanced and dependent on whether dogs are given the choice to participate in the interaction. This research underscores the necessity for families to understand and recognize canine body language and consent, ensuring that children know to invite dogs for cuddles rather than imposing them, which ultimately promotes safer and more enjoyable interactions for both parties. For a kid (and parent!) friendly guide, we recommend The Family Dog’s “Pat, Pet, Pause” protocol. Download the poster here https://lnkd.in/gusiq4sJ, and ask us about Family Dog training.
